Pay

Base Pay: $750 per week (summer season: June 17, 2026 – July 26, 2026). Additional compensation for returning staff based on number of years worked.

Benefits: None.

Housing: Living on campus on June 17, 2026 (1 pm) – July 26, 2026 (11 am) with a single or shared room; free meals (vegan, vegetarian, gluten‑free options).

Other: 90% of seasonal staff are exempt, salaried, and FLSA exempt.

About the Position

The Residential Life Teacher (RLT) works with 200+ teens (ages 14–17) in a rigorous arts program on a Vermont campus. RLTs collaborate with other RLTs to deliver residential curriculum, foster a welcoming dormitory community, and supervise an assigned group of students.

Responsibilities
  • Act as a positive mentor and role model.
  • Teach and follow the residential curriculum.
  • Guide students through dorm cleaning duties and residential skills activities.
  • Lead afternoon activities such as team sports, basic cooking, quiet art projects.
  • Prepare and conduct an evening arts workshop (up to 8 students).
  • Supervise students during various times of day; maintain attendance records.
  • File incident reports promptly.
  • Develop professional relationships with students and staff.
  • Familiarize with campus, policies, and procedures.
  • Reinforce all policies while maintaining rapport.
  • Engage students at meals, assemblies, and special events.
  • Support healthy student habits and address concerns.
  • Resolve misunderstandings of expectations.
  • Participate in community‑wide activities on and off campus.
  • Attend regular residential life meetings.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by Summer Program Directors.
Minimum Qualifications
  • High School Diploma or higher.
  • Age 21 or older.
  • Eligibility to work in the United States: US citizenship, US resident alien card, or valid work permit valid beyond July 26, 2026.
  • Pass a criminal background check and a sexual offender registry check.
  • Alignment with the Putney School’s Fundamental Beliefs, prioritizing diversity, equity, inclusion, justice, and belonging.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Willingness to support a summer arts environment for teens.
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • Excellent interpersonal and leadership skills.
  • Mature, responsible, reliable, punctual, flexible, with high moral character.
  • Prior summer program experience.
  • Experience working with teens.
  • Problem‑solving ability and a willingness to learn from mistakes.
  • Comfort with autonomy and teamwork.
  • Ask questions for guidance when uncertain.
  • Ability to multitask in a fast‑paced environment.
  • Manage stress and maintain composure.
  • First Aid Certification.
  • AV technical or event management experience.
  • Photography or gallery coordination experience.
Physical Requirements

Job includes manual labor such as leading team sports, hiking, dorm cleaning, and overnight camping trips; lifting and carrying supplies and moving furniture is required.

Things to Expect
  • Long work days with changing schedules.
  • No smoking or vaping during the program.
  • No alcohol, drugs, or illicit substances during the program.
  • No internet‑ready devices (including smart watches) outside assigned dorm room.
  • No pets or animals on campus.
  • Employment is contingent on student enrollment.
