Student Success Assistant

VSC Bargaining Unit: VSEA Staff Federation

Basic Function

Serve as frontline support staff for all students both in-person and virtually. Provide excellent customer service while assisting students, answering questions, and solving problems with advising, registration, career services, academic support, and TRIO. Maintain and update student success resources for multiple functional areas.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities
  • Serve as the first point of contact for students, connecting them with appropriate resources as needed.
  • As the first point of contact, work collaboratively across departments and within Student Success to achieve Vermont State University student success goals, the university’s mission and vision, accessibility requirements, and diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives.
  • Demonstrate inclusivity and provide excellent customer service in all modalities, including in-person, telephone, e-mail, video call, live chat, texting, and the like.
  • Assist students with transactional needs and support in use of academic, advising, career services, academic support, disability services, and registration tools.
  • Assist faculty and staff with basic advising and registration questions and provide first-level support for use of related technology.
  • Monitor and update student success resources such as student kiosks, web pages, online resources, forms, and the like.
  • Manage data, run reports, update lists, and the like for advising and other student success functional areas, including but not limited to summer registration, activity completion, event attendance, student alerts, and outreach campaigns.
  • Manage transactional aspects of the change of advisor process.
  • Register dual enrollment students for classes and serve as point of contact.
  • Register continuing education students for classes and serve as point of contact.
  • Manage TRIO application process, assign, and notify students.
  • Event planning and marketing.
  • Manage general email inboxes, forwarding emails to the correct contact if needed.
  • Supervise student employees.
  • Provide administrative support for Student Success staff, such as scheduling meetings, maintaining shared file storage and access, ordering supplies, submitting invoices, requesting meeting space, submitting work orders, planning events, and the like.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
Supervision Received

Direct supervision received from Director of Academic Support.

Supervisory Responsibility

Supervise student employees.

Minimum Qualifications

Associate degree in appropriate discipline with two to four years relevant experience, or experience from which comparable knowledge and skills are acquired.

Bachelor’s degree in appropriate discipline with two to four years relevant experience, or experience from which comparable knowledge and skills are acquired.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
  • Understanding of the educational goals and objectives of Vermont State University including attention to accessibility and diversity, equity, and inclusion.
  • Understanding of the psychological and cultural characteristics of economically and educationally disadvantaged students, particularly in a rural setting.
  • Experience recording notes and collecting data pertaining to services.
  • Excellent interpersonal and oral and written communication.
  • Strong organizational and problem-solving.
  • Experience with (or ability to learn) technologies such as Aviso, Colleague, Self
    - Service, Slate, Microsoft products, and Perceptive Content.
  • Proven record of accountability and follow-through with the ability to meet deadlines.
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a fast-paced environment and adapt to changing work.
  • Demonstrated ability to positively influence student skill development, such as communication skills, leadership skills, academic skills, technical skills, non-cognitive or ‘soft’ skills, and social skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to foster student development in the attainment of student success goals, such as academic purpose, sense of belonging/identity, agency, career readiness, civic readiness, access & equity.
