Overview
This position is located at our Spirit Mound Station location in Vermillion, SD.
Plan, organize and direct the safe, efficient, and reliable operation and maintenance of the facility to ensure an adequate supply of energy during peak energy demand periods.
Responsibilities- Coordinate and direct the safe, reliable operation and maintenance of the SMS, including plant instrumentation electrical and mechanical operations.
- Diagnose and resolve scheduled and unscheduled issues using test equipment, logic circuits, motor controls, solid-state controls, Control PCs, schematic drawings, PLC software, and historians.
- Perform or direct routine and minor maintenance of the generators and turbines; coordinate and oversee contracted major maintenance activities.
- Monitor and maintain preventive maintenance programs to ensure unit reliability and operational readiness.
- Ensure the peaking unit remains in operating condition by directing periodic unit exercises and verifying readiness for peak demand.
- Responsible for safe plant operation, including emergency response, incipient-fire suppression, and coordination with local fire and rescue agencies.
- Ensure availability of plant maintenance and operating equipment through oversight of purchasing, warehousing and inventory, in coordination with Accounting and centralized Procurement.
- Prepare the plant operating and maintenance budget for review and approval by leadership.
- Perform facility and site upkeep, including building cleanliness and grounds maintenance.
- Operate and monitor fuel delivery systems, including oil pipeline operations, and communicate fuel status to the fuel supply coordinator.
- Ensure accurate and timely completion of all plant reporting requirements, including daily, monthly, regulatory, and other operational monitoring reports.
- Oversee plant staffing activities, including candidate evaluation, hiring recommendations, training, and performance management.
- Coordinate with the Transmission Systems Maintenance (TSM) Division to support the reliable operation of plant site transmission facilities, including monthly switchyard inspections and reporting.
- Ensure on-site compliance with environmental requirements, including Method 9 visual emissions certification.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- Associates degree from an electrical or mechanical vocational program and 7 years of industrial, coal-based/combustion turbine generation, or combined cycle generation power plant experience; or
- A high school diploma or equivalent (GED or HSED) and 9 years equivalent industrial, coal-based/combustion turbine generation, or combined cycle generation power plant experience.
- Ability to obtain certification for WAPA Switchman and retain certification through the necessary training.
- This position must be respirator qualified.
- A valid driver’s license.
This position is identified as a Critical Infrastructure Protection (CIP) related position, which may allow physical and/or logical access to Bulk Electric System (BES) cyber related assets or systems. This position may allow access to privileged information relating to such assets or systems. This position will be required to strictly adhere to all Basin Electric policies, procedures, and programs applicable to the Critical Infrastructure Protection (CIP) requirements.
Preferred Qualifications- Strong electro-mechanical background.
This position requires the ability to remain in a stationary position and to move about the office building, occasional reaching below and above shoulder level, constant use of keyboard/computer and other office productivity machinery, bending, kneeling, pushing/pulling up to 20 pounds, and lifting/carrying up to 50 pounds. This position also requires finger dexterity, hand coordination. This position occasionally works in conditions of dirt/dust, fumes, chemicals, extreme heat/cold, vibration, noise, poor ventilation, electrical risks, confined areas, and at heights up to 300 feet, which requires the use of safety equipment, including a harness, in accordance with ANSI Z359 standards.
