VA Retirement Communities is seeking a Maintenance Assistant to oversee and proactively enhance the day‑to‑day maintenance needs of the Community. The role includes overall facility maintenance, plumbing, electrical, carpentry, waste/recycling management, as well as ensuring a safe, welcoming environment for residents.
- Assist the Building Services Manager with maintenance programs (HVAC, plumbing, water, gas, electrical, mechanical, communications, carpentry, painting, drywall, refinishing, grounds care, and equipment maintenance)
- Ensure safe operation of swimming pool and maintain logs/records of pool chemistry; order supplies as needed
- Conduct maintenance of exterior property: general cleaning, garbage removal, snow removal, etc.
- Coordinate readiness of vacated suites for quick availability to new prospects
- Perform annual safety reviews of all suites and common areas; maintain records
- Observe and maintain common areas in good repair and appearance; perform needed repairs promptly
- Inspect equipment and systems regularly, including security and emergency systems such as backup generator and cameras
- Arrange or perform emergency maintenance duties as required
- Maintain maintenance records, receipts, and ledgers; follow up on maintenance contracts
- Aid in receiving and storing supplies for the Community
- Participate in Health and Safety, fire safety and Quality Improvement programs; conduct fire safety training and monthly drills
- Resolve Environmental Services issues with Community Members, families and other team members
- Communicate building or Community Member issues to the Building Services Manager via email, written or verbal means
- Conduct monthly, quarterly, and annual audits as requested
- Apply infection control protocols during outbreaks
- Take on additional projects and responsibilities as assigned
- Minimum 2 years of relevant experience in building maintenance, preferred in a retirement setting
- Training in key areas of building maintenance is preferred
- Sound knowledge of plumbing, HVAC, electrical, minor painting, and drywall repairs
- Knowledge of Provincial Health and Safety regulations
- Proficient in building maintenance systems
- Proficient in MS Office (Outlook, Word, Excel)
- Effective communication skills and ability to work as a team member
- Ability to manage time effectively with little supervision
- Up‑to‑date police check – vulnerable sector, verified annually
- Valid CPR/First Aid certification
- Physical ability to bend, stretch, sit and stand for long periods, climb ladders, work in congested spaces; lift up to 50 lbs
- Flexibility to work weekends and be on call for emergencies
- Ability to communicate in verbal and written English
