Under general supervision, the Building Inspector inspects new and existing buildings and structures to enforce conformance to building, grading, and zoning laws and approved plans, specifications, and standards.

Position Responsibilities
  • 40% – Conducts inspections of commercial and residential construction or upgrading projects in order to ensure compliance with applicable codes and regulations (e.g., inspects materials, methods, and construction quality; identifies code violations; etc.). Reviews construction plans and zoning applications in order to ensure compliance with applicable codes and ordinances; issues permits when plans are approved; conducts engineering technical inspections.
  • 20% – Prepares and maintains records, reports, and other documentation related to the operation of the department.
  • 15% – Remains current on changes in applicable codes and construction practices and makes recommendations to the Chief Building Official.
  • 10% – Provides information to the general public and contractors on building codes and interpretations of such codes, general construction problems and other building code related issues; receives and responds to complaints or inquiries from citizens, attorneys, government officials, and others regarding zoning ordinance issues and conducts inspections to ensure compliance with City zoning ordinances.
  • 10% – Maintains contact with City personnel/departments, homeowners, contractors, builders, the general public, and various government agencies/officials to obtain or disseminate information; appears in court as necessary.
  • 5% – Performs other duties as assigned.

Attends meetings and serves on committees, as directed; attends training and seminars, as directed.

Maintains required licensure or certification, if any.

Meets all job safety requirements and all applicable PERRP safety standards that pertain to essential functions.

Demonstrates regular, predictable and punctual attendance.
