About the job Field Scientist

Qualifications:
  • Prefer candidates with an associate's or bachelor's degree in a science field, or 4 years of Wastewater operations or Industrial Pretreatment experience
  • Candidates must have an interest in working outdoors.
  • Highly independent and organized individual able to troubleshoot and problem-solve.
Responsibilities:
  • Analyze wastewater and industrial waters for field parameters, including pH, dissolved oxygen, sulfite, nitrogen compounds and others as necessary for industrial pretreatment monitoring
  • Maintain sampling equipment and sampling inventory
  • Collecting Industrial wastewater discharges from various businesses in the Vancouver area
  • Following laboratory and fieldwork safety protocol and using necessary PPE at all times
  • Proper disposal of environmental samples
  • Accurate data entry in LIMS
  • Maintaining a positive attitude and contributing to a team environment
  • Maintain good driving record and navigate unfamiliar areas
  • Take monitoring recordings and make adjustments to treatment process at a pretreatment lagoon, including addition of nutrients and balance of oxygen
  • Proper sample handling, including chain of custody procedures
  • Creating accurate sample fractions from parent samples
  • Proper laboratory/operational documentation
  • Coordinate with industries to schedule sample collection
  • Maintaining laboratory field equipment, including dissolved oxygen probes, pH probes, TDS sensors, etc.
  • Using a boat to take field analysis of lagoon process collecting samples and taking readings of sludge depth and dissolved oxygen
  • Using microscope to properly identify bacteria in wastewater samples
  • Creating, updating and maintaining standard operating procedures and safety documentation
  • Organize sampling events
  • Work with preserved collection bottles in a safe and acceptable manner
  • Coordinate with subcontract laboratory for sample bottle orders and courier pickups
  • Maintain equipment for successful operation of the IPP Lagoon
  • Work schedule will be day shift Monday through Friday
  • Some holiday work required
  • Must be able to stand for approximately 80% of an 8-hour workday.
  • Must be able to regularly lift items between 1 and 15 pounds
  • Must be able to occasionally lift items between 15 and 50 pounds
