Responsibilities

PRIMARY PURPOSE

Provides full working level of transportation and traffic engineering expertise to various projects and day to day operations that support the safe and efficient bus operations at CMBC.

Key Accountabilities
  • Participates in the development of plans and studies to assess transit needs, transportation infrastructure requirements, infrastructure expansion opportunities, specific service areas and transit corridors as related to CMBC.
  • Supports the Manager, Transit Engineering in the day to day operations of the Transit Engineering Department involved in Facilities Planning and Operational Projects, municipal road projects, Transit Related Road and Infrastructure Program (TRRIP), and transit safety and efficiency issues for bus operations.
  • Collaborates with Trans Link Engineering Department to conduct functional design and studies for roads facilities, transit priority plan, traffic management, traffic control devices and traffic/transit safety and efficiency projects. Participates in the development and documentation of standards and guidelines relating to roadway and multi‑modal facility designs to facilitate bus operations.
  • Participates in the research, design and development on bus stop engineering, bus loops and exchanges. Provides information and technical advice to internal and external stakeholders to ensure safe and efficient bus operations.
  • Works with safety committees of bus operators’ union to ensure operational safety according to the designed policies, standards and processes.
  • Represents CMBC on provincial/municipal sponsored transportation projects, providing technical advice, analyses and designs to resolve safety and operational issues, develops roadway improvements, reviews municipal community and transportation plans.
  • Applies sound engineering judgment to cooperatively solve problems and recommend practical solutions in a complex, multi‑stakeholder operational environment that often involves competing objectives and trade‑offs.
Qualifications

Education and Experience

The competencies for the position would typically be acquired through a university degree in civil engineering (including a P.Eng. designation or eligibility to be registered with APEGBC) and a minimum of 3 years’ experience in transportation, highway and traffic engineering and design.

Other Requirements
  • Strong knowledge of the principles, theories, concepts and practices of transportation, highway and traffic engineering, including the application of principles related to traffic management/transit priority, geometric design, road design, and transit operations.
  • Working knowledge of the deployment of state‑of‑the‑art traffic network simulation tools for transportation demand forecasting, network analysis, planning and reporting.
  • Strong analytical skills to identify, assess and provide input/recommendations related to transportation engineering and project‑related risks and opportunities in an integrated, multi‑disciplinary environment.
  • Excellent communication skills to write and deliver well‑prepared reports and presentations.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills to build trust by consulting with others and applying a team approach as needed to achieve solutions.
