The Guideway Service person will assist the Technician in the repair of mainline track, special trackwork, switch machines, reaction rail and power rail. The Service person works independently on the guideway performing duties that do not affect the safety and integrity of the guideway.
Major Duties and Responsibilities- Work under the direction of the Supervisor or Technician to accomplish scheduled or unscheduled maintenance functions on the guideway.
- Assist a Technician in the repair and maintenance of yard and mainline track, special trackwork, power rail and reaction rail.
- Perform independent work that does not affect the overall integrity of the track, including rail grinding, coverboard replacement, guideway cleaning, ballast work and shop work.
- Assist a Technician in repair and maintenance of guideway structure, drainage, walkways and fences.
- Implement work permits and return area to the appropriate responsible authority upon completion.
- Account for all materials used in performance of duties.
- Operate heavy rail‑bound equipment such as belt grinders, block grinders, speeders, unimogs and trains.
- Operate motor vehicles with a valid BC driver’s licence.
- Attend technical and safety training programs to continually upgrade skills.
- Handle emergencies and failures in accordance with established procedures through immediate response and quick action.
- Perform related duties as assigned, such as minor tasks that do not affect the value of the job.
As per WorkSafeBC regulations, this job requires an annual fit test and may necessitate the use of a respirator. In either case, the employee must be clean‑shaven. Any exemption requests should be raised to Occupational Health and/or Labour Relations for consideration.
QualificationsHigh school graduation or equivalent.
Minimum of three (3) years recent related mechanical maintenance experience in a heavy industrial environment; or an equivalent combination of post‑secondary technical training, experience working toward a relevant trade and experience working as a Guideway Labourer.
Valid Class 5 BC driver’s licence.
Experience Working in Rail Maintenance PreferredExperience in rail maintenance is preferred.

An applicant must demonstrate suitability for this position by meeting the minimum qualifications and experience to be invited into the selection process. A standard interview format will be used, including general, scenario and behavioural descriptive interview questions.
40 hours per week.
Work DesignationResident. This position works predominately on‑site.
Rate of PayWage: $46.10 per hour. All new employees will be subject to a 6‑week trainee rate at 75% of the hourly rate, with the remainder of the first year at 90% of the hourly rate. The total compensation package includes extended health, dental, transit pass and enrollment in the Public Service Pension Plan. Opportunities for development through tuition reimbursement, training and mentorship programs are available.
