The British Columbia Teachers' Federation (BCTF), located on the unceded ancestral territories of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm, sḵwx̱wú7mesh, and səlil̓w̓ətaɬ nations since 1917, is a union of professionals representing over 51,000 public school teachers throughout the province of BC. As an organization, we are dedicated to advancing learning conditions for students concurrently with advocating for BC's public school teachers and the teaching profession.

The BCTF office building is situated in close proximity to the Canada Line and other major transit routes in a central Vancouver location. The BCTF provides an exceptional working environment where respect, learning, and professional growth are championed and valued.
Please note, this is a full-time, in-person position based out of 550 West 6th Avenue, in Vancouver.
Function and purposeReporting to the Director of the Professional and Social Issues Division (PSID), the Assistant Director, Social Justice Co-ordinator assists with the co-ordination of the Federation’s social justice program, provides support to the Committee for Action on Social Justice, including the support of several social action groups, and provides support to members and locals on ongoing and emerging social justice issues.
Principal duties and responsibilities- co-ordinating the work of the Committee for Action on Social Justice.
- working with some of the Federation’s seven social action groups (2
SLGBTQIA+;
Anti-Racism;
Disability Justice; Economic Justice; Environmental Justice; Peace and Global Education; Status of Women). - supporting the social justice network and co-ordinating zone meeting planning.
- editing either the Social Justice Newsletter or the Seeds of Social Justice electronic bulletin.
- co-ordinating the social justice workshop development.
- co-ordinating and managing the Social Justice program budget, including the social justice grants and donations designated in the program budget.
- providing advice and analysis and developing reports and recommendations on ongoing and emerging social justice issues.
- other duties and Federation initiatives as assigned.
- Education
- successful completion of a Bachelor of Education (BEd) degree or a university degree and completion of a teacher education program.
- Experience and competencies
- experience working on social justice initiatives, including curriculum development, education policy work, social justice actions, and/or in the preparation of learning resources
- experience working with social justice networks locally or provincially
- demonstrated ability to provide advice and analysis on ongoing and emerging social justice issues
- experience involving work with equity seeking groups and organizations
- experience working with volunteers and adult learners
- experience supporting member engagement
- excellent communication, organizational, and administrative skills and computer literacy
- extensive voluntary and/or elected service in teacher organization work
- proven ability to function both independently and work collaboratively as a member of a team
- university training and public school teaching experience, preferably in BC.
