Main Purpose and Function

Reporting to the Carnegie Director, and working closely with a team of Programmers and a Community Activity Coordinator, this is a front line recreation position with primary responsibilities in planning and facilitating social, educational, cultural and recreational activities with participants of varying interests, skills, and abilities, and whom are ethnically and socially diverse. Located in the Downtown Eastside, Carnegie Community Centre serves an ethnically and socially diverse population, including a large percentage of people who are homeless or on low fixed incomes and residing in single hotel rooms, rooming houses or social housing.

Applicants must be willing and able to work shifts which may include evening and weekends. The successful candidate may be required to adjust shifts as operationally required.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities
  • Organizing, implementing and facilitating in arts, cultural, educational and sport-oriented recreation programming for Downtown Eastside residents
  • Stimulating active participation in program
  • Initiating, organizing and leading regular trips
  • Assisting in delivery of special events, including set up and strike
  • Preparing and distributing materials to promote activities, including some administrative tasks
  • Providing information and referrals to patrons regarding community services and resources
  • Helping ensure that the facility and equipment are maintained
  • Dealing effectively with problem situations, which may include administering first aid and liaising with emergency medical services personnel
  • Other duties assigned
Qualifications

Education & Experience

  • Completion of Grade 10, supplemented by post-secondary education in the field of recreation, arts, education, social work, or related discipline
  • Standard First Aid certification and ability to respond to first aid situations is an asset for this position
  • Naloxone training an asset

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Ability to develop and lead recreation programs for people of various interests and abilities
  • Knowledge of the Downtown Eastside, agencies, services and resources
  • Knowledge and understanding of addictions, mental illness, conflict resolution and violence prevention
  • Ability to support people with barriers in a peer/mentor relationship
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with program participants, members of the public, other stakeholders and staff
  • Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision
  • Ability to respond to emergencies, walk long distances, and carry heavy items
  • Knowledge of indigenous culture and practices is considered an asset
  • Fluency in a second language is considered an asset
  • FOODSAFE Level 1 is considered an asset
  • Standard First Aid certification and ability to respond to first aid situations is an asset
Driver License and Record Checks
  • A current and valid BC Driver's Class 4 License or higher and a satisfactory driving record is an asset
