Position: Community Support Worker Casual)

Do you possess strong interpersonal skills, a client‑centred approach, and a desire to work within a Christian organization? Are you adaptable and able to work effectively in a multi‑ethnic and socially diverse environment? If so, we have an opportunity for you!

This position offers a starting hourly salary range of $23.82–$26.03. It is a casual position with flexible and varying hours, scheduled based on program needs and availability.

You’ll frequently engage with clients facing crisis situations stemming from various challenges. Support from fellow staff members will be readily available as needed.

Main Duties and Responsibilities
  • Model Christ in word and deed.
  • Provide support to community members who visit the centre, including material and relational support, and referrals to external services. Liaise with other service agencies in the area.
  • Build strong relationships with community members. When appropriate, encourage them to explore Christianity.
  • Maintain accurate records, including important information of community members for future reference. Keep the centre and office space clean and presentable.
  • Participate in staff meetings, training and spiritual development opportunities to provide support, training and coordination for new staff, summer workers and volunteers.
  • Plan specific projects and programs and initiate activities under the direction of the supervisor.
  • Perform other duties as required by your supervisor.
  • Maintain daily security, e.g., secure all gates and doors when no events are occurring.
Knowledge,

Skills and Abilities
  • Agreement with UGM’s Mission Statement (see ) and Statement of Faith.
  • Personal knowledge and experience of the saving work of Jesus Christ.
  • Maintain a high level of confidentiality within the organization and its clientele.
  • Good interpersonal skills.
  • Basic English skills (verbal, reading and writing).
  • Basic computer skills (Excel, Word and Outlook).
  • Ability to work as part of a team under the direction of a supervisor.
  • Complete UGM’s Non‑Violent Crisis Intervention and Outreach Worker Orientation Courses.
  • Valid Class 5 driver’s license preferred.
  • Related work or volunteer experience preferred.
  • Experience dealing with complex matters, including one’s own life experience that encourages personal resilience.
  • 12 months of related work experience preferred, and willingness to work with vulnerable women who face gender violence in the streets of their community.
  • Knowledge of motivational intervention and stages of change preferred.
  • Technical competency—Trauma‑Informed Care (Level
    1): help identify negative events that have impacted the client’s functioning, and develop interventions that emphasize safety, choice and personal control.
Working Conditions

Work is generally performed indoors, with up to 10% of the time spent outdoors in all types of weather.

Work is generally sedentary in nature, but may require standing, walking or reaching for up to 60% of the time. The employee is required to look at a computer screen and use a keyboard for up to 30% of the time. Must be able to lift up to 35 lbs occasionally.

The working environment is generally favourable. Lighting and temperature are adequate. Work is performed amid normal conditions of dust, odours, fumes and noises. Occasional environmental exposures to cold, heat and water.

This position requires working in an environment that often deals with community members in crisis situations brought about by diverse problems. The ability to function independently and frequently under pressure, while managing multiple concurrent tasks including emergency situations is an ongoing expectation of this position.

Hours of work may include day, afternoon, evening and weekends. Work on statutory holidays may be required. Moderate overtime may be required. Covering the reception essential service staffing post during critical staffing moments is mandatory during the hours of 7 am to 11 pm.

Job requires frequent interaction with the public, some of whom may be upset, abusive or violent. Job requires working frequently with people in unhealthy conditions and may include exposure to bodily fluids, lice and bedbugs. Employee is required to hear information about community members’ lives, which may be distressing. Due to the nature of this role and our commitment to maintaining a safe environment, the successful candidate will be required to undergo a criminal record check.
