Main Purpose and Function: The Traffic Painter I engages in semi‑skilled traffic maintenance work which includes painting crosswalks, safety zones, and other road markings, as well as installing and replacing traffic signs, posts and barricades.
Specific Duties and Responsibilities- Uses various types of equipment in sign maintenance and road marking.
- Sets out cones at crosswalks for protection around painting areas; gathers cones when paint is dry.
- Answers and deals with a variety of public inquiries while working at various City locations and job sites.
- Orders replacement signs and road marking materials.
- Completes daily paperwork requirements.
- Drives a light service truck, when necessary.
- Other duties/responsibilities as assigned.
The hours of work are: 7:00 am to 3:30 pm or 11:00 pm to 7:30 am, Monday through Friday. The position will be required to work a 37.5‑hour work‑week schedule. Shift differential may apply. Days and hours of work may be changed in accordance with operational needs and the Collective Agreement.
QualificationsEducation and Experience:
- Completion of the tenth school grade, preferably with some related work experience, or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
- Recent related experience with traffic sign installation and road marking is preferred.
- Traffic control experience is an asset.
- Previous education and training in WHMIS is an asset.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Some knowledge of practices, methods, tools, materials and equipment used in traffic maintenance work.
- Some knowledge of Canadian and departmental standards governing the type and location of crosswalks, other related road markings and signs.
- Working knowledge of Vancouver’s Street and Traffic By‑Laws and the Vancouver street system.
- Sufficient physical strength, stamina and coordination to perform heavy physical labour.
- Ability to work outside in all weather conditions, and on uneven surfaces.
- Ability to use a variety of tools and equipment.
- Ability to lift, push and pull heavy objects.
- Ability to walk or stand continuously with frequent bending or twisting.
- Ability to work close to moving machinery and in high traffic areas.
- Ability to work on ladders, elevated areas and/or confined spaces.
- Ability to understand and carry out oral instructions.
- Ability to read and interpret drawings for the lay‑out of road markings, traffic control and sign installations.
- Ability to recognize the hazards involved in working amidst traffic and take necessary precautionary measures.
- Ability to drive a light service truck when required.
- Effective verbal and written communication skills and the ability to deal tactfully and effectively with staff and the public are essential.
- Good reflexes and a high degree of mental alertness.
- A current and valid BC Driver’s License or higher and a satisfactory Commercial driving record is required.
- 5 years accumulation of no more than 9 points, not in excess of 3 points per single year.
- 3 years accumulation of no more than 1 preventable work‑related driving or equipment‑operating accident in any single year.
