** Job Summary
** The School of Biomedical Engineering (SBME) at the University of British Columbia (UBC) is a collaborative initiative between the Faculties of Applied Science and Medicine, established in 2017. The School currently has 36 core and joint faculty members, along with over 400 students at the undergraduate and graduate levels, more than 20 administrative staff, and multiple research core service facilities.
In 2024/2025, SBME will relocate to a new campus facility, establishing itself as a central hub for biomedical engineering at UBC and beyond.
The School serves as a center for education, training, research, and innovation in biomedical engineering, advancing knowledge, developing new programs, and supporting research and innovation with a goal to lead globally in this field. Its mission is to improve health outcomes through unrestricted exploration of integrative solutions across engineering, medicine, and biology.
The Hedtrich Lab located in the Life Sciences Centre, is seeking a full-time salaried Research Technician that will be responsible for tasks associated with maintenance of the supply store, ordering of consumables and small equipment, tracking of purchases and assisting with common research services.
** Organizational Status
** The Research Technician reports directly to the Laboratory Principal Investigator and the Senior Postdoctoral Research Fellow, and works collaboratively with other technicians, faculty, students and staff in the building.
** Work Performed
*** Assists with orchestrating experiments related to 3D skin disease model generation and cell transfection studies by performing out routine cell culture maintenance work.
* Assists in analyzing and interpreting experiment results by assembling, compiling and summarizing statistical data and other reports.
* Operates, maintains and troubleshoots routine problems in standard equipment with established standards and protocols.
* Conducts (primary) cell culture work in the lab, prepares supplies for autoclaving and PBS, aliquoting supplies, packing tips, etc.
* Performs simple preparation of cell culture media, buffers in accordance with standard protocols.
* Prepares reagents, gets the cells ready, and carries out culture media exchanges in order to assist cell transfection studies, DNA isolation, and qPCRs to support the development of gene therapies for monogenic skin and lung diseases.
* Assists with routine tasks in data collection, sampling, identification and preparation.
* Performs basic literature research, such as, searching for articles on-line.
* Performs other related duties as required.
** Consequence of Error/Judgement
** The successful applicant is expected to have a high level of accuracy and attention to detail. Errors in judgment could compromise the results of research projects, and therefore impact the credibility of the unit, school, research members and various stakeholders.
** Supervision Received
** This position receives direction from a Senior Postdoctoral Fellow and PI on assignment of new duties and escalates new or unusual problems. Works collaboratively with other technicians,…
