Position

Withdrawal Management Nurse – Registered Nurse OR Registered Psychiatric Nurse at Oak Care Centre, Vancouver, BC.

About the Role

Vancouver Coastal Health (VCH) is looking for a Registered Nurse or Registered Psychiatric Nurse to join the Withdrawal Management Team (WDM) in South Vancouver. The program provides 24‑hour inpatient care, pharmacological and psychosocial services, and cultural supports such as Talking Circle and smudging. The nurse will work within a multi‑disciplinary team to support clients with substance use disorders.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide direct nursing care to clients accessing WDM services as part of an interdisciplinary team.
  • Perform nursing assessment and diagnosis, develop care plans and interventions in collaboration with team members and other health‑care providers.
  • Administer prescribed medicines, monitor client response, and educate clients/families on medication use, harm reduction, and integration of health conditions into daily life.
  • Maintain client records, participate in team meetings, planning and quality‑improvement activities, and stay current with professional knowledge.
Education & Experience
  • Current registration as a Registered Nurse or Registered Psychiatric Nurse with the British Columbia College of Nurses and Midwives (BCCNM).
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
  • Broad knowledge of nursing theory and practice within VCH guiding principles for substance use care.
  • Knowledge of BCCNM Standards for Nursing Practice for Registered Nurses or Registered Psychiatric Nurses.
  • Demonstrated ability in nursing practice related to screening, assessment, risk identification, care planning, intervention(s) and evaluation.
  • Knowledge of mental health and substance use theory and practice, including crisis intervention, psychopharmacology, interdisciplinary coordination and community resources.
  • General knowledge of Trauma Informed Practice, Harm Reduction and Strengths‑based care.
  • Competence in providing culturally safe care and promoting Indigenous Cultural Safety.
  • Knowledge of violence prevention and non‑violent crisis intervention strategies.
  • Ability to adapt to unexpected events, re‑prioritise workload, and resolve conflicts.
  • Excellent communication skills – verbal and written.
  • Critical thinking and decision‑making skills.
  • Leadership, quality‑improvement and professional‑development aptitude.
  • Basic computer literacy for client‑care systems, word processing, spreadsheets and email.
  • CPR and emergency response skills.
  • Physical ability to perform the duties of the position.
Hours and Work Conditions

The hours of work, days off and work area may be subject to change to meet operational requirements in line with the Collective Agreement and applicable statutes.

Health and Safety Requirements

All health‑care workers in publicly‑funded facilities must report past receipt of certain vaccines or history of infections. New hires will be asked to provide this information during onboarding.
