BCIT Critical Care Program. Pre‑requisite by distance (NSCC 7120, 7150, 7220 – 24 weeks):

St. Paul's Hospital is currently accepting applications for the Critical Care Educational Program. This offers Registered Nurses (RNs) the opportunity to pursue a specialty Certificate through the BCIT Critical Care Program. Providence Health Care provides 100% funding for tuition, books, and wage. Upon successful completion of the program, you will work in the Critical Care Department (Heart Centre) l’s Hospital.

Reporting RoleThe Registered Nurse reports to the Operations Leader and:
- Assesses, identifies, plans, implements and evaluates the nursing care required to assist patients/residents in meeting their physical, social, spiritual and psychological needs using an established framework for nursing practice.
- Develops, implements, evaluates and revises the plan of care.
- Incorporates teaching into the care plan and nursing interventions and/or makes referrals to other resources.
- Supports other nurses and health care professionals by sharing information and demonstrating procedures.
The Registered Nurse works within an interdisciplinary clinical framework in accordance with the BCCNM Standards of Practice and Providence Health Care’s mission, vision and values.
What You BringEducation and Experience
- Current practicing registration as a Registered Nurse with the British Columbia College of Nurses and Midwives (BCCNM).
- Eligibility for Post‑Basic Education for applicants with a minimum of 1–2 years medical/surgical experience (2 years preferred) who have not received Post‑Basic Education Funding from PHC in the past 2 years. Applicants must successfully complete the Post‑Basic Education before working in the Department.

St. Paul’s Hospital is the provincial referral centre for British Columbians and Yukon’s most complex cardiac cases. Mount St. Joseph Hospital also provides critical care at both referral and community levels.
Your Day to DayThe Critical Care RN:
- Reviews patient/resident status through chart review, observation, interviews, questionnaires and consultation with peers and team members.
- Assesses problems and needs, plans, implements, evaluates and prioritizes nursing care, and develops the plan of care using clinical judgement and evidence‑based practice.
- Provides nursing care per policies, procedures, technology and PHC standards.
- Monitors progress, evaluates outcomes, re‑assesses if goals are unmet, and modifies the plan accordingly.
