The West Vancouver Memorial Library is well known as an innovative and award-winning library that prioritizes inclusion, a learning culture, organizational integrity, and enhancing community through our programs, services, and relationships. Located on the traditional, ancestral, and unceded lands of the Musqueam, Squamish, and Tsleil-Waututh Nations, West Vancouver is a vibrant community on the North Shore and home to parks, beaches, and to sports, recreation, and arts amenities.
The West Vancouver Memorial Library has an opening for a Temporary Full-Time Head of Communications. Reporting to the Director, this position is responsible for managing the operations of the Communications Department for the Library and supporting the Library with internal and public communication strategies and policies in support of the Library’s strategic priorities and operational objectives.
Responsibilities include:
· Leads, directs, and delivers a broad range of communications services for the library, including:
oStrategic communications planning
oProtecting and enhancing a strong and inspiring brand and voice for the library
oMaintaining and developing media relationships and key partnerships
oCrisis communications management
oLead the conceptual design and oversee delivery of promotional materials and collateral across various channels – digital and print, including e-newsletters, impact reporting, and social media
oResponsible for the high-level public content, structure, and functionality of the library’s website
oCompile data to report on trends and effectiveness through monitoring environmental trends to provide strategic insights to leadership.
· Manage and mentor a team of communications and programming (art, music, special events) professionals, including:
oSelection, training, development and motivation
oPlanning, assigning and supervising work and performance, streamlining processes
oProducing departmental work plans, capital and operating budget requests, quarterly and annual financial reports, and evaluation reports
· Liaises with the Library’s Foundation to help strengthen and grow philanthropic support for the library across West Vancouver. Specific activities include:
oSupporting strategy and operationalization of fund development planning, campaigns, and activities
oWorking with Foundation members to steward donor relationships and corporate sponsorships
oMaintenance of the donor management system
· Presents to the Library Board and may serve as a representative on a Board committee or working groups
· Builds and maintains effective relationships with public interest groups, Library partner groups, and other Municipal departments.
· Participates in employee and labour relations matters and prepares sensitive labour relations communications for the Library and Library Board
· Participates as a member of the senior management team, and acts as a designated staff member in charge when required
· Participates in other duties and special projects as assigned
The preferred candidate will possess:
Degree in Communications, English, Journalism, or Public Relations plus several years related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience; knowledge of the principles, practices, objectives and organization of public libraries as they relate to communications; strong facilitation skills and knowledge of community engagement and consultation; ability to lead cross-functional teams in collaborative planning, implementation and evaluation of services and initiatives;
exceptional written, verbal and interpersonal communication skills; excellent knowledge of the relevant computer applications and high level of technical aptitude.
A valid BC Driver’s License and access to a vehicle are required. The successful candidate will be required to supply a police information check and a copy of their credentials.
