Job Description Summary
NETwork and Infrastructure Services manages UBCNET, the university’s network infrastructure supporting teaching, learning and administrative activities across the Point Grey campus and remote locations. This Team is responsible for supporting and growing the University’s large and complex academic building Data Network. UBC’s data network is one of the largest in North America with over 100,000 hardwired data ports, 2,000 network switches, 700 IT Communication Rooms, 6 major IT Hub Sites, 500km of underground interlinking fiber optic data cabling, 14,000 wireless access points, 90,000 concurrent connected wireless devices, 2,000 Virtual Local Area Networks, and over 130,000 Cat6A data cables.
All of this spans 400 academic buildings, multiple campus locations, BC Teaching Hospitals, and other satellite sites across the British Columbia.
The LAN Installation and Repair Serviceperson supports the testing, physical installation, implementation, maintenance, and documentation of campus Local Area Networks (LANs). This role focuses on the operational support and continued development of UBC’s edge data network. Key responsibilities include configuring, installing, and troubleshooting Cisco data switches; performing structured cable management; responding to customer network requests; and maintaining effective communication.
Organizational Status
Works within the Network Infrastructure Services unit as of a team providing support for UBCNET and Campus VoIP Service. Reports to the Manager under the UBC NETwork and Infrastructure Facilities unit. Works with other teams within UBC IT to support campus enterprise network services. Works with other campus IT units, IT units at other universities and institutions, the research community and other customers.
Work Performed
Participates in testing and physical installation of Local Area Networks (LANs) Edge equipment on campus, conducts Tier 1 troubleshooting of problems and performs associated repairs. This is facilitated via Network Orchestration tools that are both vendor supplied and internal toolsets.
Responsible for producing Change Advisory documentation for service impacting Access Layer network maintenance and upgrades.
Responsible for Networking Inventory upkeep for both projects and Capital renewal programs utilizing vendor software and internal spreadsheets.
Provides recommendations, maintenance and documentation on campus LAN installations. This includes providing installation estimates to clients, making implementation recommendations based on infrastructure and client needs, ordering of LAN equipment, loading upgraded LAN equipment software and maintaining documentation of diagrams and a database of user ports and equipment installed on campus.
Provide Layer 2 network analytics enabling network forecasting, future performance and capacity planning.
Assist with Access Layer Network equipment selection and implementation decisions.
Assist Network Wireless staff to configure, install, document and maintain Access Layer campus wireless equipment.
Perform moves, adds and changes to campus VoIP phone sets.
Provisioning and commissioning fiber optic circuits. Provide inter-building fiber optic patching and testing, to the latest University standards.
Carries out any other related duties as required in keeping with the qualifications and requirements of this position.
