We ensure that residents and businesses receive safe, reliable energy and basic auto insurance at fair rates. The BCUC also regulates common carrier pipeline operations, and we promote market competitiveness by collecting and publishing information about gasoline and diesel fuel activities in BC.

We facilitate fair, transparent, and inclusive regulatory processes that balance ratepayer interests with the needs of regulated entities to earn a fair return on their capital investments.

About the role:

This position is intended to be an engaging and immersive experience that provides the successful candidate(s) with opportunities to learn about public utility regulation and to contribute innovative ideas based on their unique perspective as an Indigenous person.

Responsibilities:

Working with the BCUC Lead for Indigenous Relations, the successful candidate(s) will:

  • identify projects/activities related to the BCUC’s work that support the candidate’s interests and skillset(s) and collaboratively develop a corresponding work plan for the term of the employment;
  • shadow senior BCUC staff and Commissioners to learn from their experience;
  • attend regulatory meetings and support regulatory staff.
About you:

This position is open to students and recent graduates of relevant post‑secondary undergraduate and graduate degree programs (e.g., public policy/administration, law, engineering, accounting, Indigenous studies, energy management and energy systems, economics).

Qualifications:
  • have experience with and/or knowledge of First Nations and/or Indigenous organizations in BC;
  • have experience with, or interest in, energy system(s), the energy transition and regulation in BC;
  • interest in exploring a career in the energy sector and/or energy regulation;
  • be willing to challenge themself to consider different perspectives and new ideas;
  • be open to working with a variety of teams as part of a matrixed work environment;
  • have strong attention to detail and experience researching complex topics;
  • bring strong written, verbal and interpersonal skills.
Expected pay range:

$25–35/hour for students and recent graduates. Exact offering within these ranges will be commensurate with a candidate’s education and experience level.

Duration:

Temporary full‑time from May–August 2026, or some other mutually agreed upon term. Exact start and end dates to be confirmed with the successful candidate(s). The BCUC offers a hybrid work environment based out of our downtown Vancouver office and is open to discussing flexible arrangements to ensure accessibility.
