* Responsible for operational finance, accounting and financial reporting within the Department of Athletics and Recreation.
* Oversees day-to-day financial operations in the Department.  Supervises finance staff.  Ensures that all routine finance matters are undertaken and completed.  Reports completed financial period close results to the Director of Finance, Athletics & Recreation.
* Provides active leadership and controllership over operational finance within the department, ensuring all transactions required for periodic reporting are entered accurately and in a timely manner.
* Designs, develops, controls, manages and directs the Department’s operational accounting activities as well as policies and procedures.
* Develops short- and long-term strategic plans for the finance team in the Department, and oversees the implementation of these plans for the finance staff.
* Monitors the overall financial effectiveness and efficiency of units within the Department and develops systems and processes to resolve financial issues or problems as they arise in close coordination with the Department’s executive leadership.
* Develops, recommends and implements policy, standards and procedures with respect to operational and financial accounting issues.
* Actively engages with unit leaders to review budgets on a periodic basis, as well as to identify and explain budget variances.  Provides regular updates to the Director of Finance, Athletics and Recreation on budget variances identified, as well as recommendations for remediation.
* Manages the operational budgeting process for recreation, facilities and revenue-generating units.  Works actively with operational leaders to develop an initial draft of the budgets to the Department’s finance director, and works closely with senior management on budgeting.
* Proactive with operational leaders to lead in the implementation of remedial action on budget deviations as necessary.
* Develops, recommends and implements new operational financial business processes for the Department, including internal controls, and financial oversight to improve the efficiencies of the financial information workflow within the Department and integration with the University’s financial system.
* Provides operational and strategic financial advice to the Department’s leadership and managers in key areas including financial operations, processing, forecasting and financial review.
* Operates as the key finance leader for recreation, facilities and revenue-generating units in the Department.  Actively works with managers in financial matters, and is pro-active in identifying and implementing finance process and policy changes.
* Oversees the process of developing new and revised business plans for the Department’s recreation, facilities and revenue-generating units.
* Develops the plan and sets the direction for Departmental operational leaders at a detailed level in preparing program- and activity-level annual budgets for recreation, facilities and revenue-generating operations and ensures budgeting goals align with the Department’s overall strategic financial objectives.
* Develops sustainable operating financial models for operational non-Varsity units within the Department, including active oversight of expenditures and aligning routine spend with Departmental priorities.
* Assess the financial viability of current and future business operations in the Department’s recreation, facilities and revenue-generating operations, including performing detailed analysis of the profitability of the operations, and the allocation and deployment of resources in their undertaking.
* Oversees the development and implementation of regular financial reviews in the Department, including designing and implementing a system of overall risk management and mitigation.
* Oversees the Department’s risk-based review of internal controls and operational procedures.  Ensures controls and processes are designed effectively, and ensures their operational effectiveness; provides effective oversight of the finance team in the detailed testing and assessment of procedures.
