Pomerleau is looking for a geotechnical engineer to join its rapidly growing Methods and Temporary Works Design team. You will be responsible for designing and managing the geotechnical components involved with temporary structures that facilitate the construction of permanent structures. In preconstruction phases as well as in execution phases. Our Methods and Temporary Works group consists of innovative design engineers and technicians whose expertise in designing temporary works adds value to the construction team and ensures the success of Pomerleau’s projects.

You will be part of the larger APEX team - Alternative Projects and Technical Center of Expertise that provides technical expertise to our construction teams in Building, Civil/Infrastructure and Major Projects.

What You Will Do

  • Review and analyze geotechnical reports and test results to determine soil properties and site conditions
  • Prepare and approve design calculations, plans and specifications related to geotechnical and geo-structural designs on a variety of project types.
  • Geotechnical design includes but not limited to:
  • Retaining walls (Flexible cantilever or anchored/strutted walls, gravity block walls and MSE walls)
  • Excavation support using trench boxes or slide rail systems
  • Slope stability analysis
  • Granular platform design for heavy equipment such as cranes, piling rigs, other construction equipment or to support temporary structures.
  • Deep foundations:
    Axial and lateral pile design for temporary bridges or other temporary structures
  • Immediate settlement estimation
  • Jetty and cofferdam
  • Other responsibilities could include site visits for inspections and/or attestations, review of design by external consultants.
  • Have the knowledge and ability to analyze and design according to current design codes and standards, soil behavior, and geotechnical design theories/methods.
  • Propose solutions to internal construction teams on geotechnical matters.
  • Collaborate and participate in meetings and discussions with engineers, technicians and personnel from different disciplines such as structures, heavy lifting, foundations, estimation during pre-construction, planning, design, and execution.
  • Help identify design risks and assist with risk mitigation
This role could be for you if you have

  • Bachelor's degree or higher in Civil, Geotechnical, Geological Engineering or other relevant discipline
  • Possess an engineering license from a Canadian province
  • 5-10 years of relevant engineering experience
  • Experience with temporary structures design and construction methods
  • Possess analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Strong all-around academic knowledge of geotechnical engineering. Knowledge of structural design, an asset
  • Work productively in a fast-paced environment and meet deadlines
  • Experience with engineering design software, for example:
    Geo Studio, Deep Ex, Plaxis, Ensoft (L-Pile, Group), MathCAD,
  • Microsoft Excel, AutoCAD, Bluebeam etc.
  • Excellent communication skills, both oral and written, with individuals at all levels of the organization Languages spoken/written:
    English and French will be considered as an asset
  • Possess a valid driver’s license and access to a vehicle
