Position: Geotechnical Engineer - Tunneling and Trenchless Technology Specialist )

Thurber is seeking a Geotechnical Engineer specializing in Tunneling and Trenchless Technologies to join our British Columbia Operations. The role can be based in Victoria, Vancouver, or Kamloops.

We are a consulting firm focused on geotechnical engineering, handling projects involving transportation, infrastructure, natural hazards, development, and more, often in challenging terrains.

The successful candidate will work on diverse projects, developing skills with mentorship from senior staff.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct geotechnical investigations, structural design, instrumentation, and analysis for tunnels;
  • Design temporary portal shoring, including concrete tangent piles and soil nailing;
  • Design of pipeline crossings via directional drilling;
  • Assess stability, surface settlements, and structural damage;
  • Prepare Geotechnical Baseline Reports;
  • Evaluate dewatering, grouting, ground freezing, TBM selection, vibrations, seismic aspects, and tunnel rehabilitation;
  • Provide technical support, review calculations, and perform analyses;
  • Assist in project coordination, cost estimates, tender submissions, documentation, and meeting deadlines;
  • Scope projects and prepare proposals;
  • Mentor and train staff;
  • Develop new business opportunities with the Branch Manager;
  • Build and maintain client relationships;
  • Participate in fieldwork as needed to meet project goals;
  • Manage projects and lead multidisciplinary teams.

Qualifications and Assets

  • Post-secondary degree in Civil or Geological Engineering;
  • Master’s in Geotechnical or related field preferred;
  • At least 10 years of relevant experience;
  • Expertise in Tunneling and Trenchless Technologies;
  • Experience with local Canadian geology and practices;
  • Class 5 Driver’s license;
  • Proficiency in English;
  • Eligible for EGBC membership;
  • Skills in directional drilling, foundation analysis, terrain and slope stability analysis, instrumentation, and monitoring;
  • Strong organizational, communication, and computer skills;
  • Ability to work independently and in teams.

This is an intermediate to senior role with office-based work and occasional field visits, offering career growth opportunities.

Salary Range

  • $90,000 - $130,000 annually, based on experience;
  • Salary may be adjusted upward for highly qualified candidates;
  • Candidates with less experience may be considered at a lower wage.
