Position Summary

This position reports directly to the Design Manager and is responsible for developing telecommunication designs. The Design Specialist manages projects from their inception until construction handoff.

Key Responsibilities
  • Create and deliver telecommunication designs.
  • Support creation of constructible design plans and permits by internal and external teams.
  • Coordinate with external stakeholders such as 3rd-party utilities, municipalities, building managers, and developers.
  • Update records using GIS software and other platforms.
  • Create design plans and permits as required.
  • Incorporate safety into all designs.
  • Ensure deliverables are completed on time and on budget.
  • Conduct final reviews of all completed design work.
  • Ensure a high degree of quality and accuracy of existing underground/civil plant infrastructure for the addition of proposed OSP network installations.
  • Support creation of aerial and underground permits, fiber-to-the-suite, and greenfield/brownfield residential and commercial development designs.
  • Manage day-to-day growth and sustainment of existing telecommunications networks (relocations, infrastructure adds/moves/changes).
  • Maintain knowledge and expertise of current OSP design principles and standards.
  • Assess and incorporate municipal requirements, joint-use agreements, standard documents, survey files, as-built documentation, railway permits, pipelines, and more.
  • Define outside plant requirements, scopes of work, and bills of materials.
  • Develop schedules and budgets, quote jobs, and provide redlines.
  • Drive innovation and collaborate with team members to improve processes.
  • Perform site visits and surveys, collecting underground utility data, ISP route verification, and aerial information.
  • Other duties as required.
Skills & Qualifications
  • 3+ years in the telecommunications industry.
  • Graduate of a technical college program, preferably in civil, electrical/telecommunications, GIS, or equivalent experience.
  • Thorough knowledge of local outside plant design practices and municipal permitting requirements.
  • Experience in aerial and underground telecommunications design and construction practices.
  • Experience in the design of outside plant telecommunication network infrastructure.
  • Fibre optic network design and construction experience is an asset.
  • Familiarity with applicable codes and standards (e.g., CSA, municipal, provincial).
  • Experience with GIS software such as ESRI FNT and Patch Manager is an asset.
  • Professional engineer designation (P.Eng) is considered an asset.
