overviewincumbent serves as an adult softball official, responsible for keeping the game fair, fun, and safe while overseeing fast-paced recreational league play and enforcing rules and policies set forth by the league and asa softball.
responsibilities- officiate softball games as assigned.
- promote a positive, safe, and enjoyable environment for adult participants and park patrons.
- teach and explain basic softball rules and regulations during gameplay.
- enforce rules and game standards as established by the valpo parks sports coordinator.
- communicate clearly and professionally with program participants, coaches/captains, and park patrons.
- execute department policies and procedures accurately and professionally.
- assist in maintaining a clean and safe playing environment.
- complete all assigned tasks in a timely manner.
- attend scheduled staff meetings and trainings.
- perform other related duties as assigned.
- must be 18 years of age or older.
- basic knowledge of asa/usa softball rules and regulations.
- ability to clearly explain, interpret, and enforce the asa/usa rulebook and valpo park rulebook in a fair and consistent manner.
- strong verbal communication skills, including the ability to interact professionally with participants, staff, and patrons.
- ability to resolve rule disputes and participant concerns in accordance with established guidelines.
- ability to maintain a professional demeanor, positive attitude, and strong work ethic at all times.
- ability to work effectively in a fast-paced environment, manage changing priorities, and function well as part of a team.
- ability to comply with all employer and department policies, including but not limited to attendance, safety, drug-free workplace, and standards of conduct.
- ability to coordinate vision, hands, feet, and body movements to officiate games effectively.
- ability to stand and move for extended periods of time.
- ability to perform occasional bending and physical movement as required by game play.
- ability to work outdoors in a variety of weather conditions.
incumbent performs duties according to specific detailed instruction from immediate supervisor, with indirect or occasional supervision. Priorities are determined primarily by supervisor, service needs of the public, and seasonal deadlines.
personal work relationshipsincumbent maintains frequent contact with co-workers, other city departments, printers/designers, and members of the public for the purpose of exchanging information and rendering services.
this position is part of valpo parks recreation division and reports directly to the sports coordinator.
physical effort and work environmentincumbent performs duties primarily in an outdoor, active environment, involving sitting/walking at will, sitting/standing/walking for long periods, bending/reaching, lifting/carrying objects weighing up to 25 pounds, pushing/pulling objects, crouching/kneeling, handling/grasping/fingering objects, hearing sounds/communication, speaking clearly, and close/far vision/depth perception.
machines and equipment usedincumbent will be required to use the following to complete their job functions: scoreboards/controllers and ballpark lights.
qualificationsmust pass a background check.
special requirementsnights available: monday coed - tuesday womens - wednesday mens - thursday mens. All nights are 6pm - 10pm shifts.
