Overview
Job Summary Under the direction of the Police Department Deputy Chief, the Sergeant is responsible for the supervision of an assigned shift of officers and support personnel. The Sergeant is responsible for a wide variety of related general law enforcement duties involving the prevention of crime, the protection of life and property, maintain human rights, promote individual responsibility and community commitment through a strong police/community partnership, and the enforcement of laws and ordinances and the jurisdiction of the Cal Poly Police Department.
Assists the Deputy Chief by supporting the department’s goals and objected and other related work assignments.

The mission of the Public Safety Department at California Polytechnic Maritime Academy is to promote a safe and secure learning environment by working cooperatively with the campus community to enforce the laws, preserve the peace, maintain order and provide exceptional professional services to our guests and our community. The Public Safety Department consists of an Operations Division and a Support Division.
The Operations Division is the Cal Poly Police Department which is a full service professional law enforcement agency that provides service 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, year round. All officers are vested with full police officer powers and are certified by the California Commission on Peace Officers Standards and Training (POST).
- Comprehensive knowledge and understanding of current law enforcement theory, principles and practices, current criminal codes and laws, and effective investigative techniques and procedures and their application to a wide variety of services and programs.
- General knowledge of the pertinent local, state, and federal laws and appropriate sections of the California Administrative and Education Code, California Penal Code, California Vehicle Code, and California Evidence Code.
- Able to assume command in the absence of higher-ranking police personnel and delegate responsibility. Communicate clear and concise instructions and coordinate the work of subordinates.
- Knowledge of principles of supervision, training and performance evaluation.
- Demonstrate professionalism by applying department policies and ethics.
- Must have a high school diploma or equivalent and graduation from a Peace Officer Standards and Training (P.O.S.T.) academy and a Basic Course Certificate. Five or more years of active law enforcement experience, including individual patrol experience as a police officer.
- Completion of a P.O.S.T. Supervisor Course is desirable or must be completed within one year of appointment.
- Must have a valid California driver’s license or the ability to obtain by date of hire.
- Must be able to obtain and maintain a Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC) card for work aboard the Training Ship.
Anticipated Hiring Range: $117,108 - $137,388 annually
Classification Range: $93,156 - $137,388 annually
