Police Officer (Lateral) – Vallejo Police Department

The Police Officer (Lateral) works under general supervision in all conditions, performing a variety of law‑enforcement duties that protect life and property; enforce laws and ordinances; conduct criminal investigations; prevent and suppress crime; preserve public peace; and perform special assignments in the protection of life and property. Candidates should understand modern policing issues, including the President’s Task Force on 21st Century Policing, and possess excellent verbal and written communication skills, a demonstrated ability to interact with a diverse community, and graduation from a POST certified academy within the last 12 months is highly desirable.

Responsibilities and Duties
  • Enforce local, State, and Federal laws and ordinances.
  • Patrol assigned area of the City by car, motorcycle, or foot.
  • Protect persons and property from harm during emergency and non‑emergency situations.
  • Respond to calls related to the protection of life and property, traffic incidents, and other emergencies.
  • Pursue, subdue, apprehend, and control fleeing, uncooperative, or combative persons.
  • Prepare reports of arrests made, activities performed, and unusual incidents observed.
  • Conduct both preliminary and follow‑up investigations of disturbances, criminal incidents, hazardous incidents, vehicle accidents, and deaths.
  • Prepare search and arrest warrants; make arrests; serve warrants and subpoenas.
  • Interrogate suspects and interview victims, complainants, and witnesses.
  • Coordinate and investigate violent crimes, child abuse, property crimes, vice, gaming, and narcotics violations.
  • Testify and present evidence in court; provide backup assistance for other officers and personnel.
  • Collect, preserve, and maintain evidence, found property, and property for safekeeping.
  • Assist and advise motorists and enforce traffic safety laws by issuing citations and warnings.
  • Search, fingerprint, and transport prisoners.
  • Respond to demonstrations, riots, hostage situations, barricaded subjects, and other extremely hazardous situations.
  • Maintain contact with the public regarding potential law‑enforcement problems and preserve good relationships with the public.
  • Observe, monitor, direct, and control routine and unusual traffic conditions.
  • Check buildings for physical security.
  • Administer first aid as needed.
Additional Duties (examples)
  • Perform undercover and surveillance activities.
  • Develop and maintain good relationships with informants and contacts.
  • Contact and cooperate with other law‑enforcement and non‑law‑enforcement agencies.
  • Make presentations to citizens and groups.
  • Assist with special investigative and crime‑prevention duties.
  • Serve as Field Training Officer, supervising and training new personnel.
  • Prepare and serve asset seizure documentation; seize assets.
  • Collect, analyze, and disseminate criminal street gang information.
  • Direct traffic at fires, special events, and other emergency or congested situations.
  • Perform related duties and specialized assignments as assigned.
