Job Summary

Under the supervision of the Chief Engineer and First Assistant Engineer, the Third Assistant Engineer is responsible for the maintenance, repair and upkeep of the training ship engineer equipment and spaces, supervising the training ship student workers and staff. This position will also be required to sail aboard the Training Ship for the annual Summer Sea Term.

Department Summary

The Office of Marine Programs at Cal Poly Maritime Academy is responsible for Waterfront Operations, the Training Ship, and Summer Sea Term. The Training Ship is where cadets bring Learn by Doing to life – on campus and dents train aboard the training ship during the academic year and during Summer Sea Term, applying classroom theory to real-world maritime systems.

Key Qualifications
  • Must be capable of independent work and sound decision-making with limited supervision.
  • Must be willing to support auxiliary projects and responsibilities during periods of vessel inactivity.
Education and Experience
  • High School Diploma or GED is required.
Licenses, Certificates, and Credentials
  • Standards of Training Certification and Watchkeeping (STCW) Endorsements
  • Transportation Identification Card (TWIC), or ability to obtain by date of hire
  • Medical Certificate with international and domestic endorsements
  • U.S. Passport
Salary and Benefits

The anticipated hiring range for this role is $85,000 - $100,000 annually. Note that the offer is calculated based on the background and relevant years of experience of the individual selected.

Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Anticipated Hiring Range referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Classification Range may be broader than what the University anticipates paying for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
