Position Overview
Under general supervision, the incumbent performs advanced nuclear medicine procedures assisting physicians in detection, diagnosis and treatment of diseases. Responsible for proper positioning of patients, maintenance and adjustment of nuclear equipment, and management of radiographic records.
Responsibilities- Position patients for radionuclide application and instruct them in preparation procedures.
- Adjust nuclear equipment to correct settings for each examination.
- Insert IV access and administer radioisotope injections.
- Perform renal scans, particularly on pediatric population.
- Handle radioactive spills and emergency situations.
- Review and process nuclear studies.
- Prepare and maintain records and file procedures; purge outdated files as directed.
- Troubleshoot equipment failures and perform minor repairs.
- Requisition supplies and consult with referring physicians as required.
- Train and provide technical direction to lower level technicians and nurses.
- Maintain effective relationships with medical and nursing staff to ensure timely servicing of patients.
- Participate in continuing education programs in Nuclear Medicine Technology.
- Assist in development of techniques or use of equipment not routinely employed.
- Thorough knowledge of modern nuclear medicine procedures for diagnostics.
- Proficient in operation of all types of nuclear equipment.
- Strong understanding of human anatomy and relevant safety precautions.
- Skill in operation and minor repair of complex nuclear equipment.
- Ability to comprehend and execute complex oral and written instructions.
- Ability to direct and instruct others appropriately.
- Ability to handle sick and injured patients properly.
- Strong communication skills in English (reading, writing, speaking).
- Proficiency with computer applications: spreadsheets, word processing, calendar, e‑mail, database software.
- Reliability, thoroughness, good judgment, and physical condition to meet job demands.
Valid license and current registration issued by the New York State Department of Health as a Nuclear Medicine Technologist, and certification and current registration with either the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) or the Nuclear Medicine Technology Certification Board (NMTCB) in Nuclear Medicine Technology or Computed Tomography. Minimum two years of experience in a hospital x‑ray department or private radiological laboratory performing diagnostic work with radionuclides.
Only experience gained after attaining certification and registration will be considered.
