Overview

The Inpatient Pediatric Hospitalist serves as the attending physician for hospitalized patients in the acute inpatient department of the hospital. The hospital is licensed for 96 beds, and the hospitalist will provide clinical coverage across the full inpatient service, including attending during the day and in-house call coverage on nights and weekends. This role provides comprehensive medical management throughout the inpatient stay, from admission through discharge, while leading an interdisciplinary care team to support optimal functional recovery and safe transitions of care.

The Hospitalist provides clinical leadership, education, and mentorship to nurse practitioners, nurses, and therapists, and collaborates closely with rehabilitation physicians, consulting specialists, and ancillary services. The Hospitalist is responsible for ensuring high-quality, patient- and family-centered care, supporting quality improvement initiatives, and fostering a culture of clinical excellence and continuous learning.

Responsibilities
  • Serve as the attending physician for assigned pediatric rehabilitation patients.
  • Manage the medical admission process, including history, physical examination, diagnostic evaluation, and development of the initial care plan for assigned patients, and in support of nurse practitioners assigned to patients.
  • Provide ongoing assessment and management of acute and chronic medical conditions throughout the rehabilitation stay.
  • Collaborate with the interdisciplinary rehabilitation team to support functional progress, medical stability, and readiness for discharge.
  • Coordinate care transitions, including discharge planning to home, skilled nursing facilities, or other appropriate levels of care.
  • Communicate effectively with patients and families to ensure understanding of medical plans and rehabilitation goals.
Interdisciplinary Team Leadership
  • Lead daily interdisciplinary rounds and actively participate in care coordination through rounds and interdisciplinary care meetings.
  • Collaborate with nurse practitioners, nurses, therapists, case management, and social work to align medical and rehabilitation goals.
  • Support timely and safe discharge planning through close coordination with the care team and community providers.
Education & Mentorship
  • Provide clinical mentorship and education to nurse practitioners, nursing staff, residents, and fellows.
  • Support skill development, clinical decision-making, and professional growth of all members of the clinical team.
  • Participate in formal and informal educational activities, including case discussions and in-service training.
Quality, Safety & Performance Improvement
  • Participate in the performance management process for clinical teams and Ongoing Professional Practice Evaluation.
  • Participate in and support quality improvement, patient safety, and performance improvement initiatives through committee work and project leadership.
  • Utilize evidence-based guidelines to improve outcomes, reduce variation, and enhance the patient experience.
Collaboration & Professional Practice
  • Work collaboratively with other members of the hospital team to ensure continuity of the care plan when on and off service.
  • Maintain timely and accurate medical documentation in the electronic health record.
  • Comply with hospital policies, regulatory standards, and medical staff requirements.
  • Contribute to a positive, respectful, and team-oriented clinical culture.
