Job SummaryThe Limited Term Sign Language Interpreter provides sign language interpreting for students who are deaf, primarily for in-person and online classes, meetings, and college-wide activities. The position recruits, screens, and mentors contracted self-employed interpreters to provide services to GGC students. The interpreter also dispenses training and resource information to faculty and students when appropriate and upon request. This position is designated as a Campus Security Authority (CSA) and is responsible for reporting crimes and other incidents to the Clery Act Compliance Officer for inclusion in the Annual Campus Security Report.
The continuation of this position is contingent on available funding.
- Provide 20+ hours of sign language interpreting per week appropriate to students' mode of communication
- Assess students’ communication mode and provide sign language appropriate for each student for best access
- Provide interpreting to current and potential students as needed for access outside of class; interpret with assigned team member as appropriate; provide interpreting services for college faculty and staff as needed and available once students have been assisted
- Assist the Director of Disability Services with selecting, evaluating and mentoring independent contracted interpreters for skill, professionalism, and ethical practices; maintain awareness of area contract interpreters and their availability for work
- Maintain working knowledge of national credential assessments, skill levels and certifications
- Schedule interpreters for semester assignments, special events and as substitutes
- Provide technical assistance for access needs of students who are deaf or hard of hearing; inform the Coordinator of any access issues related to these students; assist with coordination of accessible media for college-wide use and for specific instructional purposes
- Collaborate with the Director of Disability Services in preparing and presenting programs for current and prospective students, family members, the community, high school staff, and GGC faculty/staff about postsecondary services to students who are deaf and hard of hearing
- May be required to cross-train for another position to provide backup for a department and supplement resources during certain times of the year; perform other duties as assigned
Required Qualifications
- 2 Year / Associate Degree from an accredited interpreter training program or nationally certified with two+ years of experience in a post-secondary arena
- Three (3) or more years of directly related job experience
- Possession of a national interpreter certification through RID or the National Association of the Deaf (NAD)
- 4 Year / Bachelor’s Degree
- Proficient in both signed English and ASL
- Adherence to the RID Interpreter Code of Professional Conduct
45,300 - 56,600
Salary offer will be dependent on candidate's experience and qualifications, internal equity considerations, budget availability, and salary administration guidelines.
- Knowledge of current and former interpreter credentials awarded through the RID
- Knowledge of the RID Code of Professional Standards and its application in the postsecondary setting
- Ability to work evenings, weekends, and extended hours, as needed
