The Sonnenalp Hotel is seeking a full-time, year-round HVAC Maintenance Engineer to support the operation, maintenance, and repair of the hotel’s HVAC systems while ensuring a safe and comfortable environment for guests and staff.

Wage: $30.00 - $34.00 per hour, dependent on experience

Final date to receive applications: Hiring will occur on a rolling basis. Applications will be accepted until April 1st or until the positions are filled.

Primary Purpose Of Position

The Engineering HVAC Technician is responsible for helping with overseeing the Engineering staff, assisting the guests, and other staff in maintaining, repairing and/or upgrading all Sonnenalp equipment and the building facilities (including any property managed by Sonnenalp). This position will be backup for the Kitchen/Laundry Mechanic position and will require knowledge of the hotel building and its equipment. This will include some staff supervision and assistance to the Chief Engineer to ensure the satisfaction of our guests.

Maintaining all facilities in a quality manner consistent with budget parameters is of the utmost importance.

Essential Duties And Responsibilities
  • Daily maintenance including: daily rounds, checking gauges and operation of boilers, water temperatures, circulating pumps, water and electric meters, compressors, and air handlers, etc.
  • Complete work orders assigned by Chief Engineer.
  • Be responsible for planning in advance and scheduling ahead for various seasonal and special projects in order to have adequate extra help or have contractors available when needed.
  • Order major parts, equipment and tools for all facilities.
  • Respond to guests in a friendly, helpful and professional manner at all times.
  • Perform and develop preventative maintenance for all facilities and equipment.
  • Attend meetings when necessary.
  • Be able to be a substitute for the Chief Engineer duties during his days off.
  • Must be able to assist co-workers, Kitchen/Laundry Mechanic and Chief Engineer in all functions of the Engineering Department—on and off site.
  • Supervision, overseeing and coordination of staff.
  • Inspect, evaluate, and follow-up on employee’s work (including everyday tasks, PMs, etc.).
  • Train new engineering staff and evaluate new employee readiness for handling all engineering calls, especially for working alone on a night shift.
  • Able to use and interpret HotSOS Work Order System Trane BMS and Niagara BMS.
  • Follow all emergency, safety and sanitary procedures precisely
  • Maintain organized shop, mechanical rooms, work areas and storerooms.
  • Specific areas of focus will include but are not limited to:
    • Boilers
    • Chillers
    • General HVAC
    • Refrigeration
    • Drains/Sumps
    • Building Management System Usage
    • One Willow Bridge Road (when OWB engineer is not present)
    • Golf Course (when Chief Engineer is not present)
  • Perform any further duties as required by the Chief Engineer
Education/Experience
  • High school diploma or GED required. Technical or trade school training in HVAC, mechanical systems, building engineering, or a related field is strongly preferred.
  • Minimum 3 years of experience in building maintenance, HVAC systems, or facility engineering, preferably in a hotel, resort, large commercial building, or similar environment.
  • Experience working with boilers, chillers, refrigeration systems, and building automation systems is required.
  • Professional certifications such as EPA Section 608 Refrigerant Certification are strongly preferred. Additional certifications including HVAC Technician Certification, Building Operator Certification (BOC), or Certified Pool Operator (CPO) are considered an asset.

  • Must be able to work under conditions requiring prolonged standing, lengthy walking, frequent bending, stretching, crawling through tight spaces and working up to roof top level.
  • Requires the ability to distinguish colors and symbols.
  • Requires frequent exposure to dust, dirt, water and chemicals.
  • Required to work outside in all weather conditions.
  • Required to work overtime as needed.
  • May be required to work evenings and weekends.
