Brunel University of London invites applications for a Research Assistant or Research Fellow in the area of sustainable built environment. The successful applicant will work as part of the EPSRC project CHOOLYARD:
Outdoor thermal comfort models for children.
Location:
Brunel University of London, Uxbridge Campus – Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, College of Engineering, Design & Physical Sciences. Full Time, 24‑month fixed‑term contract.
Salary:
Research Assistant Grade R1 – £36,640 to £38,638 per annum (London Weighting), potential to progress to £39,682. Research Fellow Grade R1 – £40,757 to £44,179 per annum (London Weighting), potential to progress to £47,921.

- Micro‑climate simulations using computational fluid dynamics and dynamic thermal modelling to study how physical parameters and micro‑climate of playgrounds influence children’s thermal comfort.
- Collect and analyse data from case‑study schools for calibration of the models.
- Design studies based on surveys, laboratory and simulation data to propose solutions.
- Model the resilience of proposed solutions using climate‑change weather data.
- Collaborate with all project partners and attend monthly progress meetings.
- Experience in building engineering and/or building physics with a focus on energy and environmental performance of buildings and outdoor spaces.
- Research experience in CFD and dynamic thermal modelling; understanding of urban heat island effect and generation of future weather files.
- Computer programming skills and a record of research publications.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills and ability to work independently.
