Position: Data Engineer - National Data Infrastructure (LDI)

Have you always wanted to work in a unique, multi-stakeholder project that directly strengthens the innovative power of the Netherlands? Then come work for ROM Utrecht Region!

About the LDI project

Across the Netherlands, the nine Regional Development Agencies (ROMs) together hold valuable data about innovative entrepreneurs. To unlock the potential of this information, the ROMs have joined forces in the National Data Infrastructure (LDI).

We have built a shared Microsoft Fabric platform where the ROMs collaborate and already publish the first joint reports. In the coming period, we want to expand the platform’s functionalities and professionalize its use. To achieve this, we are strengthening the LDI core team with a Data Engineer who will bring technical expertise in-house and help us grow further.

This is a key moment in the development of the LDI: the foundation is in place, and you will help shape how the platform scales, matures, and is used nationwide.

Important: we cannot sponsor visas or residence permits! For this job you have to be already residing in the Netherlands.

What we offer
  • A Full-time role (36 hrs/week)
  • Salary in scale 11 from €56,481.12 to €70,682.84 gross per year (including 8% holiday allowance and 8.3% year-end bonus) according to the CAO Rijk, depending on experience
  • Pension via ABP, with 2/3 of the contribution paid by us
  • 27 vacation days (based on full-time) and hybrid working (50% office, 50% home)
  • Training budget of €1,500 per year
  • You will work in a diverse and international team of Business Intelligence specialists, where courage, trust, positivity and meaningful work are highly valued
  • Mobility package supporting sustainable commuting and business travel
Your role : building the foundation for joint data solutions

As a Data Engineer, you will design, develop, and maintain the pipelines, models, and infrastructure on which the LDI runs. You work closely with colleagues from all ROMs to translate business questions into scalable data solutions in Microsoft Fabric. You also safeguard data quality, security, and interoperability across organizations.

Key responsibilities
  • Build and maintain data pipelines and integrations in Microsoft Fabric (ETL/ELT)
  • Design and implement data models and datasets for reports, dashboards, and analytics
  • Ensure data quality, governance, and security (including GDPR/AVG compliance)
  • Translate business needs into technical data solutions together with analysts and stakeholders
  • Contribute to standards and best practices for shared data usage across ROMs
  • Support the expansion of platform functionalities with new sources and use cases
  • Strengthen in-house knowledge and expertise within the LDI team
  • You will be one of the key technical experts within the LDI core team and have real influence on architectural choices and standards
Who are you?

You are a communicative and hands‑on professional who enjoys building technical solutions that make an impact. You can work independently but also collaborate effectively with colleagues and partners. You are eager to understand business processes and translate them into reliable data products.

What do we ask for?
  • Bachelor’s or master’s degree in computer science, data engineering, or a related field. Or relevant other education in the world of data engineering
  • 2–5+ years of experience as a Data Engineer (or a similar role)
  • Strong skills in SQL, Python, and Power BI
  • Experience with Microsoft Azure and preferably Microsoft Fabric (or other cloud data platforms)
  • Knowledge of data modeling and data quality frameworks
  • Familiarity with Git and CI/CD principles
  • Affinity with security, privacy, and governance in data environments
  • Excellent command of English, spoken and written. Dutch is an advantage, but not required
Nice to have
  • Knowledge of APIs, streaming, or real‑time integration
  • Interest in AI enablement and responsible AI use
  • Experience in the startup, scale‑up, or VC ecosystem
