All North Slope Borough employees in positions where federal law mandates testing must comply with federal regulations and will be subject to pre‑employment, random, post‑accident, reasonable suspicion, return‑to‑duty and follow‑up testing. This position becomes subject to federally mandated testing upon obtaining a CDL.
Responsibilities- Service, diagnose and repair light, medium and heavy‑duty equipment; perform minor and major repairs including overhauling engines, drive trains, hydraulic systems and electrical systemsli>
- Supervise apprentice workers engaged in vehicle and equipment repair work.
- Daily inspections, fueling, fluid checks, lighting, tire and startup safety inspections of equipment.
- Schedule and perform routine preventive maintenance.
- Perform repairs to all aspects: electrical, drive train, suspension, engine, heating, hydraulic.
- Troubleshoot and diagnose drivability problems and repair on equipment.
- Operate a variety of diagnostic tools and electrical, air and hand tools.
- Welding and fabrication as needed.
- Perform minor body work on equipment.
- Maintain records, work orders, purchase requests, quotes, timesheets and daily/monthly reports.
- Attend safety meetings and training sessions as required.
- Travel to and work within North Slope Borough villages.
- May be required to work non‑traditional schedule to include evenings, holidays and weekends.
- May be subject to 24‑hour on‑call status.
- Operate vehicles and equipment to diagnose and ensure operating efficiency.
- Clean and maintain equipment, tools and general work area.
- Support responsibility for safe work practices in all projects, activities and operations.
- Consistently build knowledge and expertise about current job.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- Knowledge of North Slope Borough organization, operations, policies and procedures.
- Knowledge and understanding of basic shop safety, Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), and Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS).
- Ability to lift and/or move up to 50 pounds regularly and occasionally up to 100 pounds.
- Must be able to walk, lift, reach, stoop, stand, grasp, balance, climb, kneel and crouch.
- Must be able to work in various inside and outside environments with weather changes, noise vibrations, job hazards and atmospheric conditions.
- Ability to understand safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions and procedure manuals.
- Skill in operation of diagnostic equipment, troubleshooting and repair of equipment.
- High school graduate or G.E.D. or a combination of 12 years of education and related work experience.
- Five years of work experience as Heavy Equipment Mechanic or completion of the NSB Heavy Equipment Trainee Career Ladder.
- Ability to obtain a valid State of Alaska driver's license within six months of hire that meets North Slope Borough insurance criteria.
- Ability to obtain a valid Commercial Driver's License within one year of hire that meets North Slope Borough insurance criteria.
