Overview
Strata Networks is seeking an experienced Horizontal Directional Drill (HDD) Operator to join our construction team. This role is ideal for someone looking to build a long-term career—not just a job—while working on critical telecommunications and Fiber-to-the-Premise (FTTP) infrastructure projects. Candidates must be comfortable drilling in a variety of ground conditions, including rock and cobble.
Job PurposeThe Directional Bore Machine Operator performs a wide range of duties related to the construction, installation, and maintenance of Strata’s telecommunications and fiber networks.
Responsibilities- Operate and maintain directional bore machines ranging from JT10 to AT40
, along with related equipment - Perform daily inspections and routine maintenance to ensure safe operation
- Safely place conduit and cable in accordance with Strata standards and specifications
- Maintain jobsite safety for crew members, the public, and the surrounding infrastructure
- Load, haul, and transport equipment and materials in compliance with DOT and UDOT regulations
- Accurately read and interpret construction plans and provide clear project redlines
- Communicate regularly with supervisors and team members on project status
- Maintain company equipment, vehicles, tools, and work areas
- Perform additional duties as assigned by the Construction Supervisor
- Minimum 3 years of experience operating directional bore machines (HDD)
- Strong knowledge of HDD techniques, ground conditions, and locating practices
- Active CDL with a clean driving record
- Ability to safely operate heavy and power-driven equipment
- Ability to interpret construction drawings and plans
- Willingness to perform hands-on labor as needed (shoveling, hydro-vac use, conduit placement)
- Strong communication skills, both verbal and written
- Basic computer skills
- Proven problem-solving ability and attention to detail
- Ability to work independently or as part of a team
- Must be able to pass a drug screening
- Outdoor work in all weather conditions
- Irregular hours, including on-call, weekends, holidays, and occasional out-of-town work
- Long shifts during peak construction season (typically 10–15 hours per day)
- High-traffic roadways and active construction sites
- Ability to lift 100+ pounds
- Perform strenuous physical labor daily
- Enter and exit trenches, manholes, vaults, and confined spaces
- Operate hand tools and heavy machinery safely
