Description:

The Cedar Breaks Astronomy Interpretation Internship provides mentored training and hands-on work experience for college students or recent graduates with an interest in astronomy, night sky interpretation, and public engagement.
This intern will support the monument's Night Sky Tours and evening interpretive programming, helping visitors explore the dark skies of Cedar Breaks through telescope viewing, constellation tours, and astronomy-based interpretation.
Interns will gain experience in public speaking, telescope operation, informal and formal interpretation techniques, and program development. Mentorship and training will focus on astronomy content knowledge, interpretive skills, and National Park Service operations, empowering interns to pursue careers in astronomy education, science communication, or public lands interpretation.
Preference will be given to applicants who have completed coursework in astronomy or a related field; however, all applicants with demonstrated passion for astronomy and science communication are encouraged to apply.
Responsibilities:

Assist with and lead Night Sky Tours, including telescope operation and constellation laser tours
Develop and present original astronomy-focused interpretive programs
Provide informal evening visitor contacts related to astronomy and dark sky preservation
Learn safe setup, calibration, and breakdown of telescopes and related equipment
Communicate complex astronomical concepts in engaging, accessible ways to diverse audiences
Support daytime interpretive or visitor services programming as needed
Professionally greet visitors and provide accurate information about the natural and cultural resources of Cedar Breaks

Qualifications:

Demonstrated interest in astronomy and night sky interpretation
Completion of at least one astronomy college course preferred (but not required)
Strong public speaking and communication skills
Ability to work outdoors in variable mountain weather conditions and at high elevation (10,000+ ft)
Comfort working after dark and engaging large groups in low-light settings
Adaptable and able to maintain a positive outlook in a dynamic environment
Ability to work well with diverse ages and backgrounds
Pass a federal background check
Ability to work as part of a team or independently
