This seasonal position will expose a motivated individual to all facets of course management encountered during the growing season, from irrigation start-up to winterization, along with relevant cultural practices performed throughout the year.
The Assistant in Training works closely with the Golf Course Superintendent and the Assistant Superintendents mastering the necessary skills and knowledge to excel in the turf industry, including staff scheduling and supervision, actively participating and overseeing job performance, and inspecting course conditions on a daily basis. Irrigation repair and scheduling, as well as chemical applications are primary components of this position.
The AIT may serve in the Assistant Superintendent’s capacity during any absence. The Assistant in Training must be a self-starter, willing to work a flexible schedule including early mornings, weekends, some holidays and emergency calls as needed.
- Works closely with the seasonal maintenance staff, ensuring proper and safe use of maintenance facility and equipment, and may occasionally supervise a small team for specific projects.
- Assists in routine agronomic practices in the upkeep of putting greens, tees, fairways, roughs, bunkers, ponds, streams, and related structures, utilizing such techniques as topdressing, aerification, mowing and irrigation repair. Proficient on all equipment, with the ability to perform a wide variety of tasks at a moment’s notice, and to properly demonstrate equipment use to the staff.
- Performs sprayer and spreader calibration and application of fertilizers and pesticides; responsibilities include the safety and direction of chemical handlers and/or helpers as well as the proper tank mixing as specified by the Director.
- Maintains application records related to the use of chemicals on the course, while tracking chemical inventories.
- Operates, repairs, and maintains golf course and clubhouse irrigation and pumping systems. Participates in the daily programming of irrigation cycles and record keeping of water use.
- Constant monitoring of the turfgrass systems during the growing season, ensuring the proper water, nutrient, and disease prevention levels.
- Helps the Assistant Golf Course Superintendent oversee the completion of work assignments by crew members and assists with field decisions regarding job procedures, work standards, and machinery use. The AIT will perform quality control on a regular basis, reiterating the standards established by management.
- Performs other duties as directed by his/her supervisor.
- Ability to work and perform in indoor and outdoor environments, with exposure to variable and sometimes adverse weather conditions.
- Exposure to loud noises, vibrations, fumes, airborne particles, grease, oil, and chemicals.
- Physical activity is moderate to demanding and will require bending, kneeling, and lifting.
- Must be able to lift and carry up to 70 pounds.
- Must be able to use hand and power tools, such as a shovel or a chainsaw.
- Must be able to walk around clubhouse grounds, golf course, or other landscaped areas, and sit on and operate golf carts, utility vehicles, tractors, and mowers.
- Must be able to remember information important to golf maintenance and landscaping programs; read, write, and verbally communicate with employees, management, members, and public.
- Requires a 2–4-year degree in turfgrass-related field, plus 3 years of golf course work experience.
- Requires a valid driver’s license, and an acceptable driving record as approved by the Company’s insurance carrier.
- Candidate is encouraged to obtain and maintain a valid State of Utah non-commercial pesticide applicator’s license.
- The candidate should aspire to pursue a career in golf course management, have strong organizational skills, be highly organized and detail oriented.
