OverviewIncumbents in the Academic Advisor position advise prospective, current, and former students. Incumbents advise and assist students in the development of academic plans and class schedules. Additionally, incumbents assess academic level, attend to student academic inquiries, assist in the resolution of individual academic problems, and advise on academic program changes. Incumbents also prepare students' graduation applications for Dean approval in Degree Works and assist students with semester-by-semester planning in preparation for declaring a major;
plays a pivotal role as a member of the student services team, taking part in various initiatives, serving on committees, and participating in recruitment and retention efforts, as well as other Uintah Basin-led activities; provides coordination and support for the Education College Opportunity (EdCO) program in partnership with the Ute Indian Tribe, including facilitating tuition- and fee-free course offerings at the Ute Tribe Education Center and maintaining a consistent on-site presence to support students.
Collaborates with Tribal education leadership to align course offerings and related outreach activities with community interests, strengthening long-standing relationships and supporting broader educational and cultural initiatives.
- Provides advising services in person, by phone, or by email.
- Provides accurate information related to curriculum, graduation requirements, and university policies and procedures.
- Creates semester-by-semester graduation plan in Degree Works and monitors students' progress toward their declared major.
- Provides information and strategies to utilize available campus resources and services.
- Maintains confidentiality.
- Assists students in making responsible and informed decisions impacting academic progress.
- Encourages and guides students as they define and develop realistic goals.
- Assists students to understand the purpose of higher education and the impact on life goals.
- Discusses the benefits of building a learning community, network, and support system among peers, professors, and mentors.
- Makes appropriate referrals to other University and non-university resources.
- Maintains records and documentation of advising interactions.
- Performs miscellaneous job-related duties while accepting meaningful role as a member of the Uintah Basin student services, participating and aiding in strategic goals and initiatives.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree is required.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Verbal and written communication skills and effective public speaking skills including ability to communicate with individuals as well as groups.
- Ability to work in a fast-paced environment with multiple demands and changing needs.
- Ability to work collaboratively within a team environment.
- Ability to work with students in 1:1 or group advising settings.
- Ability to learn and maintain current knowledge of complex program requirements, policies, and procedures.
- Ability to work with different student backgrounds.
- Ability to develop and/or deliver programs.
- Knowledge of and proficiency in a variety of current and emerging technology platforms.
- Ability to work within a team comprised of other student services members toward common goal of recruitment and retaining of students.
