We are seeking an Environmental Health & Safety Operations Specialist for our Johnson Welded Products – Manufacturing Operations located in Urbana, Ohio.
Position OverviewThe EH&S Operations Specialist supports the Environmental Health & Safety (EHS) compliance function within a heavy manufacturing environment by assisting with day‑to‑day safety operations on the shop floor. This is a hands‑on role focused on visibility, engagement, and practical safety support for employees, contractors and supervisors. This person will report to the EH&S Manager.
Key Responsibilities- Conduct routine (EHS) inspections within manufacturing, production, and associated areas.
- Assist with EHS training, toolbox talks, and onboarding of new hires in a manufacturing environment.
- Assist in maintenance with safety programs, permits, government regulations, recordkeeping & documentation activities, and other industry practices, including ISO 14001 Environmental Management System (EMS).
- Serve as a point of contact for basic EH&S questions from employees, contractors, and supervisors.
- Actively participate and support EH&S Manager with accident, incident, property damage and near‑miss investigations, including documentation and follow‑up corrective & preventative actions.
- Assist with maintaining EHS records, logs, training and required documentation.
- Help support PPE programs, safety signage, and general compliance activities.
- Participate in EHS initiatives and continual improvement efforts across operations.
- Serve as an active & professional role model regarding all company EHS standards and initiatives.
- Assist with additional EHS duties, as assigned and needed.
- Prior experience in a manufacturing, industrial, or production environment preferred.
- Familiarity with basic workplace EHS principles and practices.
- Strong communication skills and the ability to work directly with hourly and salaried employees and contractors.
- Comfortable working on the shop floor in an active manufacturing setting.
- Detail‑oriented, dependable, and willing to learn.
- 3‑5 years of safety experience in an industrial setting.
- Knowledgeable of federal, state (OSHA, EPA, ANSI, NFPA, and ISO‑14001) regulations.
- Knowledge of proper lock out tag out (LOTO), confined space entry, job safety assessment, machine guarding, PPE assessments, and root cause analysis.
- Ability to analyze and interpret technical or government regulations.
- Knowledge of Microsoft Windows and MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook).
- Bachelor’s degree in safety or related technical field.
- Knowledge of safety and health policies including key components of the OSHA regulations.
