Job Summary

Perform skilled work involving structural steel, ornamental ironwork, and reinforcing work.

Responsibilities
  • Welds or fabricates steel structures (girders, columns, framework, handrails, outside doors and windows, and security screens).
  • Rigs hoisting equipment, erects steel, and makes repairs as needed on heavy steel installations.
  • Performs movement and placement of heavy equipment and machinery.
  • Performs special welding tasks as requested by other F&S shops.
  • Installs, fabricates, and repairs fire escapes, ladders, or any equipment that may be unsafe.
  • Employee to be available through callback assignment to respond to emergency work during off-normal working hours to handle problems relating to iron work needs.
  • Assists and trains apprentices.
  • Performs other duties as required or assigned.

Additional Physical Demands
  • Work is assigned through the foreperson, work management group, service office, or via the director of building maintenance & grounds or his designee in oral or written form.
  • Interacts with campus customers, supervision, and peers. Creates a work environment which develops accountability for performance and develops teamwork and unity within the shop and throughout campus.
  • May work in extreme weather conditions.
  • Must be aware of potential danger from moving parts and equipment.
  • May be exposed to dust, loud noise, smoke, and cleaning compounds.
  • May work in temperature extremes ranging from freezing weather to steam tunnels.
  • May work at heights to inspect equipment located on platforms or hung above tall ceilings.
  • May work amid hazards of work sites such as dust, noise, and in areas such as coal fired power plants, animal rooms, and laboratories.
  • May be exposed to radiation and chemical fumes, molten lead and welding arcs. Use of Personal Protective Equipment is required when hazards exist.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Certificate of completion of apprenticeship as an Ironworker under a registered Bureau of Apprenticeship and Training program

OR Experience sufficient to qualify as a journeyman Ironworker, with a minimum of four (4) years (48 months) of actual work at the trade, which may have included apprenticeship or vocational training.

  • Possession of a valid State of Illinois driver’s license at time of hire and maintained throughout employment.
Knowledge,

Skills and Abilities
  • Extensive knowledge of the ironworkers’ trade in the use of tools, rigging, and lifting equipment.
  • Possesses a general knowledge of iron work and university standards.
  • Journeyman level skills in ironwork.
  • Ability to read and understand blueprints, schematics, etc.
  • Proficient in welding (MIG, TIG, and arc).
  • Thorough general knowledge of OSHA safety regulations and proper use of iron working tools and equipment.
  • Ability to ensure work is completed properly in accordance with statutes and codes in a safe and timely manner.
  • Ability to support the Mission, Vision, Values, Guiding Principles and management operational directions and philosophies of Facilities and Services.
  • Ability to exemplify high standards of professionalism, loyalty, craftsmanship, and dedication.
Appointment Information

This is a 100% full-time Civil Service 2196 - Ironworker position, appointed on a 12-month basis. The expected start date is as soon as possible after 4/20/2026. Salary is $38.98/hour.
