Overview

The Surgical Technician Student Extern functions as an integral part of the perioperative team as the first or second Surgical Technician, under the supervision of a Surgical Tech Preceptor and a Registered Nurse. They assist in delivering safe and effective care to the patient during the intraoperative period. This role prepares the Student to transition into a Surgical Tech position upon completing their program, thereby enhancing recruitment and retention.

Responsibilities

Apply principles of asepsis to maintain a sterile environment.

Demonstrate competency in technical skills, judgment, and knowledge.

Provide age-specific care to obstetrical patients according to departmental policies.

Assist in organizing supplies and equipment to ensure efficiency and cost-effectiveness.

Maintain a safe environment for patients, staff, and oneself, adhering to safety and legal requirements.

Charge for equipment and supplies.

Participate in room turnover and setup.

Maintain and clean equipment, reporting repairs as needed.

Perform sterilization, disinfection, and document loads per policy.

Maintain sterility during surgical setup and procedures.

Assist with obtaining supplies, equipment, and patient positioning.

Perform sterilization of surgical instruments and document accordingly.

Assist in scrubbing duties, including teaching roles for students and residents.

Efficiently turn over OR rooms and set up for the next patient.

Qualifications

Certifications:

Basic Life Support (BLS) within 30 days - American Heart Association (AHA)

Education:

High School Diploma or GED (Required)

Work Experience:

Enrolled in a Surgical Technology Program and has begun the clinical process.

Salary Range
