Position: Health Educator I

Overview

Health Education - McKinley Health Center

Working collaboratively with other wellness colleagues within and outside McKinley Health Center, focuses broadly on student wellness with specialized responsibilities on sexual health, stress management, and physical fitness. Plan and implement illness prevention/health promotion programs on topics identified and, when appropriate, present/organize workshops to promote general wellness.

Responsibilities
  • Student Advising & Education
  • Offer one-on-one consultations to students on a range of wellness topics, with a focus on sexual health, stress reduction techniques, and physical activity.
  • In consultation with the supervisor, refer students to MHC units, campus or community resources as deemed appropriate.
  • Provide inclusive, supportive guidance based on current health education practices.
  • Provide individual teaching, instruction and counsel to students on topical areas.
  • In consultation with the supervisor, identify existing and potential new campus/community resources to enhance referral services.
  • Program Development & Outreach
  • Design and lead educational programs, workshops, and outreach events across campus.
  • Create resources and campaigns promoting safe sexual practices, stress management skills (e.g., time management, mindfulness), and the benefits of physical activity.
  • Develop and share educational materials (flyers, videos, social media posts).
  • Conduct literature reviews and utilize data from reliable sources to plan and implement wellness programs.
  • Connect with established campus and community resources to enhance collaborative ventures (outreach).
  • Peer & Campus Collaboration
  • Mentor and support peer educators and student wellness advocates.
  • Partner with campus departments, student organizations, and academic units to promote health initiatives.
  • In consultation with various campus units/groups, collaborate as deemed needed and represent the MHC Health Education Unit in campus-wide events and resource fairs.
  • Contribute to campus-wide events such as health fairs and wellness weeks.
  • Administration & Professional Development
  • Track and evaluate program participation and impact.
  • Assist in supervising interns or graduate assistants.
  • Participate in training and professional development related to college health, diversity, and wellness.
  • Assist with the development of annual goals and objectives for the Health Education Unit.
  • Participate in MHC/Health Education Unit’s Peer Review Process.
  • Provide training and temporary supervision of new Health Education hires to ensure successful onboarding of new MHC Health Education staff.
Specialty Factors

Bachelor’s degree in health education or a related field. A total of two (2) years (24 months) in education, training and/or work experience in the development of health education programs in community, clinical, and/or campus settings. (

Note:

Master’s Degree in an area consistent with the duties of this position may be substituted for one (1) year of work experience.)

Preferred Qualifications

Master's degree.

Skills And Abilities
  • Ability to positively contribute to the mission of the University Student Affairs, and the mission of MHC. Sufficient skills to inspire students academically, personally, and emotionally to enable them to achieve their academic goals. Ability to work under supervision and subsequently provide/receive feedback. Ability to conduct individual wellness consultations. Ability to connect and build individual relationships with groups within and outside the MHC.

    Skills and ability to plan, implement, and evaluate programs. Ability to support outreach events and help create educational materials. Ability to collaborate and facilitate peer-related activities. Ability to refer students to appropriate MHC services. Basic knowledge of health promotion theory and strategies.
