JOB TITLE: Assistant Principal

JOB SUMMARY: Assistant Principal The Gerber School Assistant Principal provides academic and behavioral oversight to Gerber School. He/She creates and maintains a safe and therapeutic school environment that promotes the highest quality of academic instruction, Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) and mental health stability programming possible. He/She promotes a positive learning environment focusing on effective, innovative and rigorous special education instruction.
He/She also provides direct crisis intervention/behavior management services to students as needed.
PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential function satisfactorily.
- Assist the Principal with the design, implementation, evaluation, and modification of Gerber’s therapeutic and academic program and ensure continuity of implementation across the program.
- Schedule and serve as LEA in IEP, EDC, Domain, and FBA meetings.
- Participate and/or facilitate classroom team meetings, problem solving/data meetings, Gerber staff development and residential staffing meetings.
- Assist the Principal, Social Worker and teachers with developing, implementing, modifying and maintaining behavioral systems and management plans for the entire school and for individual youth.
- Coordinate academic programming with the Urbana school counterparts and 02 districts (i.e. graduation requirements, course descriptions, class schedules, transcripts, IAR/ACT/ISA testing etc.)
- Coordinate new student intake procedures with the principal, program assistant and educational liaison (including record requests, initial IEP, transcripts, scheduling, etc.).
- Ensure that rules and procedures are uniformly observed and that student discipline is appropriate and equitable.
- Assist the Principal with developing the master schedule and classroom rosters.
- Participate in the hiring, training, mentoring, supervision, evaluation and corrective action (including disciplinary action) of all Gerber (116 and CCH) staff members.
- Provide supervision for CCH interns and student teachers as needed
- Support and supervise the design of rigorous, standards-based instruction with measurable outcomes.
- Coordinate with contractual related service (SLP and OT) staff to communicate and schedule for student service needs and IEPs.
- Collaborate with principal and SIP team to evaluate school-wide academic and behavioral data, assess needs and implement school improvement plans.
- Coordinate and facilitate assessment processes (IAR, ISA/ACT) with ISBE, districts and other parties.
- Assist the Principal and teachers with monitoring progress on students ‘academic, behavioral, transition and life skills goals.
- Assist with writing and updating IEPs in the event of a teacher vacancy or other circumstances.
- In conjunction with the principal, develop and update student and staff handbooks.
- Complete required DCFS reports for all students
- Assist in the completion of the Daily Program, including ensuring daily staff coverage.
- Provides decision-making authority in the absence of the Principal.
- Perform critical reviews of Significant Event Reports (SERs) and ISBE reports and assures that critical and unusual behavior and events are reported to the Principal, RTC staff, placing districts, parents/guardians, courts, and files, as required.
- Assist with the coordination of the beginning of the school year and the closing of the school year tasks
- Provides leadership by maintaining awareness of, and assisting with monitoring the compliance of state/agency standards, laws, rules, policies and regulations, as well as district and Cunningham policy and procedures.
