Description:

The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) seeks an ASSISTANT VICE PRESIDENT-UTILITIES & ENERGY MGMT to be in responsible charge of the Utilities Energy Management (UEM) unit, to plan, to manage, to administer, to organize, to develop and to supervise those resources which support, energize, enable, operate, preserve, sustain, protect, and optimize the central energy plants distribution network, related contracts management for purchased utilities, which serve UAB affiliated units.

This includes steam, chilled water, natural gas, domestic water, industrial water, storm sewer, sanitary sewer, electrical distribution, and communications/data networks. The role coordinates with municipalities, utility companies, and other UAB partners (e.g., information technology / data, physical security). The position manages and documents performance of all UEM functions, and incorporates sustainable practices, total cost of ownership considerations, and environmental stewardship into daily and long-term decisions.

It facilitates and ensures meaningful communication between UEM and planning, design, construction, sustainability, environmental health & safety, facilities administration, and similar entities. It provides input into design and construction standards, engages in review of design documents as the client, steward, and facility manager of proposed UEM infrastructure and upgrades. It coordinates with City, County and State entities on matters of common impact and interest, communicates with top-level management to coordinate and operationalize strategic plans, and provides regular updates and performance indicators for the UAM organization.

Responsibilities
  • Provide Long Term Planning.
  • Provide infrastructure management and oversee UAM projects, engineering work, and programs that interface with other departments.
  • Direct the operation and maintenance of UAB's three Centralized Enterprise Chilled Water plants, multiple de-centralized plants and District Steam plant.
  • Evaluate current plans to revise to ensure reliability, sustainability and operations in the development of strategic plans to achieve enterprise goals.
  • Coordinate and maintain documentation for the operation, monitoring, and maintenance of all major equipment and systems.
  • Interview, select, promote and evaluate applicants, employees and supervisors for UEM department.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering is required (ABET-accredited institution, preferred) along with a minimum of ten (10) years of progressively responsible engineering and utilities management experience, including executive-level leadership of large, multidisciplinary organizations and management of teams of twenty-five (25) or more professional, technical, and skilled trade employees. Work experience may NOT substitute for the education requirement.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license is required. Certified Energy Manager (CEM) certification is desired.
  • Driving record should meet University underwriting guidelines to drive vehicle in performance of University business. Current guidelines include possession of a valid driver's license issued in the United States, at least 21 years of age and at least 3 years of driving experience. Must maintain an acceptable Motor Vehicle Record (MVR).
