Night shift General Mechanics play a critical role in keeping the hospital safe and operational overnight, working with a high level of autonomy while supported by on-call teams.

Position Summary

The General Mechanic performs a variety of maintenance and repair tasks, including minor HVAC, plumbing, electrical, and carpentry work. The position responds to service requests, completes preventive maintenance, and supports uninterrupted hospital operations during overnight hours.

Compensation

Hourly pay range for this classification: $17.00 - $22.10 - $27.65

  • Night Shift Differential:
    Additional $1.00/hour
  • Starting offers will not necessarily begin at the midpoint or maximum of the range. Offers are determined by relevant experience (both UAB/UAB Medicine and external), pay grade minimums, internal equity, departmental budget, UAB salary guidelines, and the salaries of incumbents in the classification.
  • A complete application is required for consideration; all relevant, verifiable experience must be listed.
Minimum Requirements
  • High School Diploma or GED and two (2) years of related experience.
  • Driving record should meet University underwriting guidelines to drive vehicle in performance of University business. Current underwriting guidelines include possession a valid driver’s license, issued in the United States; at least 21 years of age; at least three years of driving experience; maintain an acceptable Motor Vehicle Record (MVR).
Work Schedule
  • 7:00 p.m. – 7:30 a.m.
  • Thursday, Friday, Saturday, plus a rotating Wednesday
  • Designated essential personnel; required to report during emergency situations, including inclement weather
Key

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Performs routine, corrective, and preventive maintenance across multiple trades (HVAC, plumbing, electrical, carpentry).
  • Responds promptly to service requests, including emergencies, hot and cold calls, lighting and plumbing issues, and minor repairs.
  • Troubleshoots problems independently and coordinates solutions during overnight hours.
  • Completes work orders and documents repairs using a computerized maintenance system and handheld device.
  • Follows hospital safety standards, infection control practices, and departmental procedures.
  • Supports other maintenance staff as needed and communicates effectively with hospital personnel.
  • Maintains professionalism when interacting with patients, staff, vendors, and visitors.
  • Must be able to safely perform the essential physical functions of the position, with or without reasonable accommodation, including:
    • Lifting, carrying, pushing, and pulling materials and equipment weighing up to 50 pounds
    • Standing, walking, bending, stooping, kneeling, crouching, and climbing for extended periods throughout the workday
    • Working at heights exceeding 30 feet and in confined or restricted spaces
    • Walking significant distances between and within hospital buildings
    • Working in varying environmental conditions, including extreme temperatures, noise, and active mechanical or electrical systems
    • Wearing required personal protective equipment (PPE), including respirators and self‑contained breathing apparatus (SCBA), as required for certain tasks (clean‑shaven requirement for proper fit)
    • Working safely in an active healthcare environment around patients, staff, sensitive equipment, and emergency situations
