Postdoctoral Fellow - Environmental Genomics (Freshwater)

Two-year fixed term role supporting research through eDNA/eRNA analysis, data interpretation, & guiding postgraduate students on impactful freshwater science projects.

In this role you will play a key part in delivering cutting-edge freshwater research across multiple government funded freshwater focused programmes.

The Postdoc blends hands-on laboratory work, bioinformatic analysis, academic writing, and meaningful collaboration with students, researchers, iwi, and partner organisations. You’ll contribute to research that supports sustainable freshwater management and innovative applications of eDNA in Aotearoa.

Some tasks of the role include:

  • Undertaking eDNA/eRNA extractions, PCR, and metagenomics preparation
  • Conducting bioinformatic analyses for metabarcoding and metagenomics
  • Working with live/dead discrimination and intra-/extracellular DNA/RNA methods
  • Analysing large eDNA/eRNA datasets and environmental metadata
  • Supporting postgraduate students with lab work, data analysis, and writing
  • Contributing to MBIE Endeavour and Smart Idea research projects

This is a two-year fixed term role based at our Lincoln Campus and works 37.5 hours per week (1.0 FTE).

The salary for this position is fixed at $75,000 per annum.

To be successful in the role you will have:

  • A PhD in a relevant field and 2–3 years’ research experience
  • Proven experience with eDNA/eRNA techniques, analyses, and large datasets
  • Strong laboratory skills including DNA/RNA extraction, PCR, and bioinformatics
  • Excellent communication skills and a collaborative, inclusive working style
  • Experience supporting postgraduate research and contributing to publications
  • Ability to work effectively with colleagues, iwi, stakeholders, and students
