Upward Bound Programs Residential Mentor – Potential Paid Internship
Upward Bound Programs (UBP) at Penn State – University Park is hosting a 2025 Summer Academy and is seeking five talented and motivated summer Residential Mentors (RMs) who are interested in developing their leadership and mentoring skills while engaging in academic and social activities with approximately 60 students from Hazleton, Mifflin County, Mount Union, Newport, Reading, and Steelton‑Highspire School Districts.
The Summer Academy will operate from June 16 through July 25. RM training will occur at the University Park campus on June 9 through 13. RMs must be able to provide their own transportation to/from the campuses for the departure of field trips or residential stays.
The six‑week Summer Academy is structured as follows: 3 weeks virtual with a weekly in‑person field trip, followed by 3 weeks in a residential format – the week of June 22 at Penn State Altoona, the week of July 6 at Penn State Berks, and the week of July 20 at Penn State University Park. Responsibilities during the residential camps include establishing a supportive, encouraging, and welcoming environment in the residence hall;
serving as a role model; ensuring the well‑being and safety of all students and staff; enforcing UBP and University regulations; supervising students; chaperoning trips; mentoring during academic activities; planning and leading social and recreational activities; and performing monitoring duties such as free‑time checks, meal checks, sick duty, and end‑of‑summer cleanup.
- Attend classes and provide tutorial support to students.
- Lead icebreaker activities and various engagement activities during virtual days.
- Supervise students, chaperone weekly trips, and attend staff meetings.
- Complete program documentation and evaluations by established deadlines.
- Build a sense of community with UBP participants and coordinate with program teachers, office staff, and other stakeholders.
- Enforce UBP and university policies consistently and objectively.
- Prepare and lead academic, social, and recreational activities for the residential components.
- Monitor students during free time, meals, and scheduled duties.
- Assist with cleanup of residence hall at the end of the program.
- Minimum 30 credits earned by the beginning of June 2025.
- Current Penn State student or enrolled at another institution.
- Experience working with youth in a residential setting preferred.
- Must be able to commit to daytime, evening, and rotating overnight duties.
- All RMs must stay in the student residence hall during residential components.
Hourly pay: $15.00/hr for both virtual and residential weeks. Room and board provided for the three residential weeks, along with meals that occur during working hours. Entrance fees to events (e.g., museums, movie theaters, sporting events) will also be covered.
