Area Supervisor – Ross Stores, Inc.

Become part of Ross Stores, Inc., a leading off‑price retailer with more than 2,200 stores nationwide. In this role, you will manage a specific area of the store, oversee daily operations, and serve as Manager on Duty when required. You will open and close the store, supervise associates, ensure a safe and welcoming shopping environment, and support all core retail processes.

General

Purpose

The Area Supervisor is responsible for opening and closing the store, supervising associates, maintaining a friendly shopping environment, ensuring merchandise presentation and store cleanliness, and executing all company operational processes as needed.

Essential Functions Maintaining Safe & Secure Environments
  • Prioritizes safety in all activities.
  • Maintains awareness on the sales floor and addresses unsafe conditions.
  • Secures the building, monitors entrance/exit, checks EAS devices, and safeguards the cash office.
  • Keeps egress clear and allows safe customer safety procedures.
  • Tests fire alarm systems and responds to after‑hours alarms.
Customer Service
  • Treats customers, associates, and leaders with respect.
  • Demonstrates courtesy, friendliness, and professionalism.
  • Recognizes associates through company recognition programs.
Personal and Store Brand
  • Represents and supports the company brand.
  • Maintains a professional appearance per dress code.
  • Ensures all areas are clean, maintained, and merchandised to standard.
  • Removes daily trash.
General Merchandising
  • Ensures recovery, sizing, and markdowns meet company standards.
  • Receives merchandise truck and processes inbound deliveries.
  • Maintains stockroom organization and cleans all stockrooms.
  • Supports floor moves, promotional signing, and re‑wraps as needed.
  • Minimizes loss due to damage and enforces monthly presentation guidelines.
Loss Prevention
  • Complies with the Loss Prevention Awareness Program.
  • Maintains strong presence on the sales floor.
  • Safeguards confidential, cash, and credit card information.
  • Maintains Public View Monitor (PVM) and conducts package inspections.
  • Implements company best practices to maximize productivity.
Front End Supervision and Operations
  • Ensures personnel meet front‑end standards.
  • Manages line pace and customer wait times.
  • Trains associates on cash registers, shortage control, and refund processes.
  • Controls break schedules and ensures all equipment functions.
  • Maintains supplies and ensures go‑backs are processed correctly.
Fitting Rooms
  • Maintains fitting room cleanliness.
  • Audits garment tags and ensures compliance.
  • Processes go‑backs and secures returns.
Administrative Duties (As Assigned by Store Manager)
  • Coordinates cash pulls and bank deposits.
  • Handles pay‑roll administration and scheduling compliance.
  • Performs additional duties as directed.
Competencies
  • Manages work processes and business acumen.
  • Plans, aligns, and prioritizes tasks.
  • Builds talent and collaborates effectively.
  • Leads by example and communicates clearly.
  • Ensures accountability and execution.
Qualifications and Special Skills
  • Excellent verbal communication.
  • Fluency in English.
  • Prior customer service and supervisory experience preferred.
  • Familiarity with POS equipment.
  • Basic mathematical calculations for retail.
  • Availability to work evenings and weekends.
Physical Requirements / ADA
  • Use all store equipment (PDTs, registers, PC).
  • Stand, walk, and move around the store up to 100% of working time.
  • Regularly bend, squat, kneel, climb, carry, reach, and stoop.
  • Occasionally push, pull, and lift >25 lbs.
  • Operate janitorial equipment and rolling racks as assigned.
