JOB DESCRIPTION:

MAINTENANCE/GROUNDS I

RANGE 11

Under the immediate supervision of the site administrator or indirect supervision of the Supervisor of Maintenance/Operations or Designee, performs a variety of semi-skilled maintenance, repair and construction tasks, general grounds maintenance and gardening work; and other related tasks as required.

• Performs groundskeeping duties including irrigation, mowing, fertilizing, seeding, pruning, landscaping, and laying out and lining play fields for athletic events.
• Installs, repairs and checks playground equipment to assure safety.
• Responds to emergency calls.
• Performs custodial duties as directed.
• Maintains accurate work records.
• Performs routine service of maintenance and grounds equipment.
• Performs routine maintenance duties including painting, electrical, plumbing, carpentry, cement work, fencing, and furniture and equipment repair.
• Performs semi-skilled maintenance, repair, and construction work in the various maintenance trades.
• Assists skilled maintenance personnel in the construction, installation, and maintenance of roofs, furniture, fences, playground equipment, cabinets, shelving, chalkboards, and bulletin boards.
• Sweeps and picks up paper and other debris from walks and driveways.
• Waters landscaped areas by hand or by operating a sprinkling system.
• May assist in the installation, maintenance, and repair of sprinkling and irrigation systems.
• May assist in the moving and arranging of bleachers, furniture, and a variety of other equipment for special events.
• Operates a variety of light grounds maintenance equipment, such as riding lawn mowers, edgers, lawn vacuums, and sweepers.
• May assist in the maintenance and repair of heating, ventilating, and cooling systems.
• Performs other related duties as assigned.

Knowledge of:

• Use and maintenance of hand and skill tools; the materials, tools, and procedures used in rough and finish carpentry; tools and materials used in plumbing; tools and materials used in electrical repair;
• Common tools, materials, equipment and terminology used in the general maintenance trades;
• Rules, regulations and policies pertaining to the maintenance of school facilities;
• Safe working methods and procedures;
• Basic methods, materials, tools, and terminology used in grounds maintenance and gardening work.

• Acquire skill quickly in jobs requiring mechanical ability;
• Erect and work from ladders, riggings and scaffolding;
• Operate necessary groundskeeping equipment as required;
• Maintain work records in an accurate manner;

• Appropriately use tools and equipment common to the maintenance trade;
• Read and work from simple drawings and blueprints;
• Understand and carry out oral and written directions;
• Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with a variety of personalities;
• Effectively use hand and power tools common to grounds maintenance work;
• Performs heavy manual functions and activities;
• Operate light grounds maintenance equipment;

• Person performing service in this position classification will exert 50 to 75 pounds of force frequently to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects and occasionally will lift up to 90 lbs. This type of work may involve ascending and descending ladders, stairs, scaffolding, and ramps, and will involve walking or standing for extended periods.
• Perceiving the nature of sound, near and far vision, depth perception, providing oral information, the manual dexterity to operate equipment and use hand tools, and handle and work with various materials and objects are important aspects of this job.
• Exposure to hot, cold, wet, humid, or windy conditions caused by weather may occasionally be experienced.

Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and skill in qualifying. A typical way to obtain the required knowledge and skill would be:

• Experience as semi-skilled worker in one or more of the basic maintenance trades.
• Experience in groundskeeping or gardening work.

• Equivalent to the completion of the twelfth grade, supplemented by coursework or training in one or more of the various maintenance trades.

• Possession of a valid California Motor Vehicle Operator’s License.
