Balfour Beatty’s Power Transmission & Distribution (PT&D) business is growing, and we’re looking for a motivated and dependable General Operative to join our team. This is a fantastic opportunity to support the successful delivery of critical national infrastructure while developing your skills and growing within a dynamic organisation.

As a General Operative, you will play a vital role in supporting the environmental operation of the project and by assisting the deployment of our water sampling plan, along with supporting wider general activities within the Project.

This role will be based at the Skye Reinforcement Project offices at Glen Mor, near Fort Augustus but the project itself extends onto the Isle of Skye so flexibility to work across sites is essential.

What you’ll be doing
  • Undertaking water sampling at designated spots on watercourses sited along the project line (from Fort Augustus to Edinbane)
  • Sample collection and drop‑off in a timely manner to ensure the sampling plan is adhered to
  • The co‑ordination of sampling plant & stock ensuring all administration procedures are followed and ensuring accurate stock management.
  • Liaise with operational staff to ensure sampling materials required for site are arranged and accessible in line with operational needs.
  • Support the site teams for activities such as peat probing, DCPs and site surveys
  • Basic IT‑based data management and maintaining sampling protocols
  • Assist the HGV driver and Stores Person with all duties
  • Unloading & loading of delivery vehicles.
  • Check deliveries against advice notes and for quality, quantities & damage.
  • Hiring, acceptance and off hiring of plant and equipment.
  • Management of the calibration of tools & equipment (inc Lifting)
  • Security of yard ensuring access is only permitted to authorised personnel.
  • Ensuring yard(s) and store is always tidy.
  • Refuelling plant and equipment
  • Support the project as required with ad hoc activities
  • Take reasonable care for the health and safety of yourself and of others who may be affected by your actions or omissions whilst at work.
  • Cooperate with BB in all matters pertaining to Health and Safety to enable the Company to carry out and enhance its legal duties and requirements.
  • Do not recklessly interfere with or misuse anything provided in the interests of health, safety and welfare.
  • Bring to the attention of your manager any perceived shortcomings in health and safety arrangements or situations that you consider to be serious or imminent danger to yourself or others.
  • Do not undertake any safety critical work activity or activity for which a specific competence is required unless you have received the necessary training/instruction and/or assessment and hold the appropriate Certificate of Competence/Authority to Work. Do not instruct others to undertake such work if they do not hold the appropriate Certificate of Competence/Authority to Work.
Essential Qualities & Experience
  • Full clean driving licence
  • Ability to work in a team
  • Good verbal and written communication skills, with basic IT skills for data entry and reporting
  • Good organisational skills and ability to undertake practical problem solving out in the field
  • Able to undertake work in high pressure situations
  • Comfortable being outdoors in all weather conditions
Desirable Qualities & Experience
  • Experience of working on a variety of construction project types.
  • Knowledge of the Power industry and/or environmental management sector (is an advantage)
  • Valid Telehandler licence (will be an advantage)
  • OHL Authorisations (will be an advantage)
  • Map reading and/or GIS experience (will be an advantage)
  • Emergency First Aid at Work
