As part of the wider team in general practice, General Practice Assistants (GPA) provide a support role, carrying out administrative tasks.
GPAs are trained to undertake routine administration duties. They can help to free up GPs time and contribute to the smooth running of appointments, improving patients experience in the surgery.
The General Practice Assistant will support the smooth running of clinics by performing the more routine administration tasks on behalf of the GP, freeing up their time to focus on the patient. The GPA must ensure that they work within and recognise their scope of practice, escalating any concerns to the GP.
Main duties of the jobReporting directly to the Practice Manager(s)/PCN Manager you will work with other members of the Administration Team in the management of our contract and service requirements across the PCN, which could include:
- QOF and recalls
- IIF
- Summarising and Coding
- Blood request forms
Assisting Clinical Pharmacists in the identification of the highest risk patients for drug monitoring and medication reviews
Contacting patients to arrange onward care and/or clinical feedback under instruction from the hospital or GPs
Sorting all clinical post and prioritising for the GP in terms of actions. Signposting some post to others such as clinical pharmacist etc.
Extracting all information from clinical letters that needs coding and adding to notes
Arranging appointments, referrals, tests and follow up appointments of patients
Supporting GP with basic observations as required
Completing basic (non-opinion) forms and core elements of some forms for the GP to approve and sign such as insurance forms, mortgage, ESA
113 benefits agency forms etc
Helping the GP liaise with outside agencies e.g., getting an on-call doctor on the phone to ask advice or arrange admission while the GP can continue with their consultation(s)
Arranging patient appointments, referrals and follow up appointments

Person Specification Qualifications- Have completed or working towards completing the GP Assistant framework
- Can demonstrate Maths and English at GCSE level
- Have a working knowledge of IT systems such as Systm One and Microsoft Office products.
- Can demonstrate an understanding of confidentiality.
- Demonstrates a knowledge of medical terminology.
- Have an understanding of the referral process
- Have worked in a health environment
- Have worked in a team
- Have worked with a clinical IT system
- Have used clinical coding
- Have excellent inter-personal skills and are able to work in a team.
- Is able to work autonomously and can prioritise their workload.
- Has good time management and can meet deadlines.
- Is flexible and can adapt quickly to changing situations
